No, the Bolt is not a good deal if you keep the Roamio on TE3 and don't use apps. There's nothing wrong with a Roamio as a DVR, or with Minis, as long as you don't upgrade the UI. And you don't have to.

Roamio was the best one they made.

So I'm guessing if you want more than 4 tuners, you need to pay $$$$ for an Edge?

Well any Tivo with more than 4 tuners will be a cable card only Tivo (6 tuners). If you want the Edge version, $1000 with lifetime. Or buy a couple 4 tuner lifetime Roamio or Bolts, you'd have 8 tuners, TE3 or TE4 capability (run one on each to compare?), cable or OTA capability, and could get both for $400-700. If using cable might have to pay a second outlet fee for the 2nd device.

For strictly DVR users I definitely agree.

Not sure why anyone would buy a Cable only Bolt with only 4 tuners when they sell a Cable/OTA Bolt with 4 tuners, unless the Cable only 4 tuner Bolt was cheaper.

The only cable only 4-tuner was the Premiere 4/XL4(Elite). A 4-tuner cable only Bolt does not exist.

I could not resist $380 for a Bolt Vox 500Gb w Lifetime. I still have a 1Tb drive from my other Bolt that I upgraded to 3Tb and some resistors to tame the fan noise. Now I just have to hope I can roll back to TE3 and that Tivo doesn't brick this thing. But for $380...heck, worth the risk. If nothing else, it will be fun trying to get this one open without breaking those damn plastic tabs.

I haven't read here of any TE3 sidegrade issue apart from every now-and-again, which seemingly has been overcome, in the end, with TE3 success.

Congratulations! I know that the Bolt design and engineering has some questionable decisions (sometimes the fan, perhaps the cooling (which can be overcome externally), the use of a 2.5" drive), but I can't help but like it. :)

Buy the extended warranty... you'll probably need it.

When I bought my Roamio OTAs the 3 year warranty was only $39 for each box and got you priority advanced replacement with NO shipping charges.

A 90 day parts and labor (one year parts) warranty is laughable so if the 3 year warranty is still that cheap it's a good investment.

I could give you the economist party-line that extended warranties always are stacked in the best interest of the insurer rather than the insured, and that sources such as Consumer Reports routinely recommend against them, as a result, in most circumstances, and instead recommend that consumers "self-insure." But they certainly do come in handy if the circumstances arise. ;)

With what anything costs to replace and especially to ship $39 for 3 years is cheap insurance.

Wonder if TiVo is dumping Bolts now due to ATSC 3.0 coming this year? Buying an OTA Bolt now and you'll be missing out on the new OTA channels. Probably not a big deal... Bolts don't seem to last that long anyway.:(

Kidding.. no rocks. Just wondering if this is a sale to get rid of Bolts that will be behind the times very soon.

Bolt isn't even their newest dvr so they definitely want to get rid of stock.

ATSC 3.0 ... its appeal to the consumer will depend what it does for the consumer and how much it costs the consumer to upgrade. I imagine any new ATSC 3.0 Tivo is going to be $500+.

And Bolt seems cheap enough and ATSC 1.0 will last long enough so Bolt OTA with lifetime would still be worth $100-$200 in a few years if you want to upgrade to a new ATSC 3.0 Tivo.

    upgrade question...

I currently have a renewed bolt 500gb ota or cable. It works fine. I have about 10 months left on my warranty. Slightly considering buying the 1tb 6 tuner cable bolt for $450 with all in plan (then selling my current one). I don't think I will likely ever be a TiVo Edge owner as I am not planning to adopt TE 4- so that could affect me as well.

I have one mini right now on my system and have a 2nd mini set up to add to the system before the end of the year- which then ties up 3 of the 4 tuners. Space gets tight sometimes, but pretty easy to delete stuff to control it and rarely have issues of not being able to record stuff.

It is my understanding that the ONLY differences between my renewed 500gb bolt and the new 1tb bolt vox are these items..

    1 two more tunes
    2. double the HDD
    3. vox commands- but those require TE4- I would roll back to TE 3 though as I like that now- so not relevant.

I also want to make sure if I went this route there wouldn't be any preroll ads- I opted out, but downgraded to TE3 anyway and plan to stay there.

Any thoughts? Am I over thinking this, just stay put with what I have as it does what I need?

    Thanks!

I agree with you on considering the Bolt instead of the Edge only because of TE4. If you like TE4, go for Edge. But if not, Bolt is your last choice.

4 tuners vs 6 is your only question.

I keep looking at the 6-tuner as well, but hard to give up my aged but trusty Roamio Pro for the "newer" Bolt which seems to be less reliable per all these threads.

DMK, I hear you on all the bolt concerns. I read a ton of them and was nervous about that and was also skeptical- but decided to take the plunge last spring when there was a great deal.

My bolt has been solid (though the temp was high, so I did put a fan under it to keep it cooler) and it has been snappier than my old roamio. No regrets on my purchase. I would advise you to get this one- good price. As for me, trying to decide if I am ready to get rid of the antenna option and add the extra tuners (my antenna reception has been hit and miss, but I like the option of not paying a cable bill).

Hope this info helps you. I'm still unsure for me.

For me, my Roamio has been randomly rebooting which is a pain. ALso, I do use the Netflix and Vudu apps on Tivo. But it is pretty slow compared to the Tivo Mini Vox on the other TV I have. Also, I believe the Bolt is 4K. I'm not familiar with TE3 or TE4. I'm using, what I believe is the newest software update.
