Is it me, or is every barbecue based cooking show worse than the one that preceded it.? The host is a mess and it appears the show was done over a weekend at Liberty Park NJ. It seems to me that Famous Dave's helper is the cook and Dave approves what he does. This show is also humiliating for Chris Lilly, a bbg competition circuit legend who hosted a show far superior to this one a few years ago. His "look at what I made" dutch oven moment made him look the fool. The Shed guy is a jerk, but I've eaten there and base one of my sauces on their "shed spread". I've also eaten at Famous Dave's and based nothing in my cooking on it. Big Bob Gibsons is on my bbq todo list.

I generally agree about this show having watched the first "one bite" episode yesterday. I just wish they'd devote one whole show to each of the pitmasters instead. I've also been to Big Bob Gibsons in Decatur, AL. It was OK, but nothing special, though I understand that it is extremely consistent, and you know the parking lot smells really good there :) One of their specialties is a white BBQ sauce which indeed what interesting.

I am not impressed, but have watched it. So far I have seen nothing to try from it.

    BUT---
It looks like Chris Lilly just won Memphis in May this weekend

Show is a total joke. I've seen the first two episodes and am ready to cancel my season pass for it.

BBQ? Please. They never give them more than four hours TOTAL for an challenge. You can't do any REAL BBQ in that amount of time. And one of the challenges from yesterday's show was side dishes. Sides?? Give me a break. Where's the meat?

I've only seen the first ep so far but I don't understand the scoring. How does the girl that finished 2nd in the first challenge end up dead last overall after the second? Her food must have been abysmal given Lilly's ranking in both challenges but they don't bother to explain or even give the ranking for the second round individually. Like she said, her meat was fine, it was the pineapple that did her in.

I just watched ep 1 last night (well, I kept falling asleep but saw most of it I think) and was not terribly impressed. I would have preferred seeing cookers that I recognized. I like Chris Lily (I think that's the right Chris - the one who others see as their big competition. The only person I knew from anything else was Love and I don't find him particularly compelling.

I was just glad that awful guy from other bbq shows (big guy from Texas or Georgia with name starting with an 'M' and is a total pr!ck) was not there. Can't seem to remember his name. I'll watch more. At least the good thing is that there won't be that many eps, what with only 6 starters and one elimination per ep.

Myron Mixon from GA. Yes a jerk, but good. Watch for the new series. Coming on Memorial Day. From what I heard (and can't find it on-line) Myron is back cooking and Dr. BBQ is now a judge.

I agree on the time. I am going to an eggfest this weekend and can cook whatever I want but the time constrains me, so I can't do ribs. It looks like I am going to do salmon and maybe a pork tenderloin. We can light the eggs at 7:00 and start serving food at 9:00, all fires must be out by 3:00. While there is time to do ribs (5 hours) I can't do 300 portions and I am not guaranteed a grill at 7:00. So I will do something quick.

Xuxa & Tripmac - Thanks! Always seem to forget M Mixon's name - maybe because I cannot stand the guy. Maybe I could appreciate his goodness, at cooking, a lot more if he wasn't such a d!ckhead. He just gets in my craw.

On the show where he judged last season, however, I didn't find him nearly as abrasive.

I should clarify, Myron is a cook on the new show and Dr. BBQ is a judge. Back to the Kingsford Cup again this time.

Man my Google fu is very poor today.

Myron's BBQ book was just published. It is apparently written the way he talks and looks interesting.

I took a one day class from him back before he ever appeared on TV and he really is a sweet, nice guy. The TV producers clearly gave him a character to play and he did it quite well.

I don't know why they call Tim Love a "BBQ legend". He's not. His restaurants are NOT BBQ joints.

So the "Best In Smoke" competition is over. I won't reveal the winner here. What I will say is that the shows did get a bit more interesting, though in my opinion they were more about self-promoting the competition via drama (was this produced by Fox?), rather than what it really took to make the BBQ dishes the Pitmasters were working so hard at preparing. I did get a few ideas about some rub recipes and ingredients to try out, though, so it wasn't exactly time wasted. Perhaps the show met the producers goals, but all-in-all, I guess I was disappointed by the overall content (not necessarily the outcome of the competitors, though I can see how they chose who they did). It seemed to be less of a cooking show and much more of a game show. Just my 2-cents. Anyways, it's nice to see some other shows on The Food Network as this is "Grilling Week."

That bothered me from the first episode. The girl that got sent home did well in the first challenge so she must have really bombed in the second but they didn't give any indication of how bad.

I wish they would have done more than one long smoke challenge. Most BBQ competition shows I've seen involved smoking the meat overnight. These guys were only given like 2 hours.

I think this type of competition should be blind-judged.

I was rooting for Chris, so bummed that other guy got it (I didn't like him very much). Somehow I totally missed when the kid was axed. I liked the kid too (can't remember his name). Over all, I didn't find this competition very exciting. Last weekend I did have the pleasure of watching Myron M get his a$$ kicked in another competition, tho. :D
