Hi everyone first post. My 30 hour Hughes TIVO died (Green Screen saying error) and I don't want the stupid direct TV DVR. I have one and it sucks. I bought a used Direct TV TIVO off ebay before I knew I could buy just the hard drive. What should I do to get this fixed now?

Should I swap out the bad TIVO with the new used one or just switch the hard drives? What is involved with the switch? Thanks!

    Welcome to TivoCommunity!

What brand/model is your replacement DirecTivo? Unless it's the same model as your Hughes DirecTivo, you cannot simply swap drives because the software image files are different. So your easiest path is to replace the Hughes with your "new" DirecTivo. You may need a new Access Card to activate the replacement DirecTivo. You'll have to call DirecTV to find out when you activate the replacement unit.

If you also want to repair/upgrade your Hughes' hard drive, check out these resources ....

If it is the same model you should be able to swap drives and do a clear and delete everything.

You can buy a drive from DVRupgrade it will already have been prepared with Instantcake and all you will have to do is put it in.

Well I'm hoping if I can just swap this drive that I won't have to buy anything else. Thanks everyone for the help, this forum is a great resource.

Yep, that should work. Just remember to peform a "clear and delete everything" reset after swapping the drives to initialize the new drive to your old Tivo's motherboard.
