This happened to me as well, but, I noticed the burning error right away and received a replacement from Humax.
Check around on these forums for info on a burner though...it shouldn't be very expensive (<=$50), and, it'll probably last longer than the original drive would have anyways.
Whose fault is it you didn't try the DVD on receipt? If you had they would have fixed it for free. Will it play commercial DVDs? You, of course, are using DVR-R blanks and not trying to use DVR+R correct?
Commercial's worked fine from the begining. No type of burnable DVD from the US or UK that I tried worked. Yes I should have done a thorough check of every component as soon as I bought it. But I did have problems with it recognizing the disc from day one- It said I had the wrong disc type- I believed it since it played rental DVD's. It took a while to figure out it wasn't the DVD's but the burner.
Tech support is useless.

I bought the first one new and then got a re furb from humax for it . . .
The second I bought was a refurb
Both are DT800's and I have put 250 gig HD's on both and replaced both DVD burners at least once (but i use them ALOT so it's not Humax's issue)
All in all my Refurbs are kicking BUTT !!!!
