In the biggest acquisition in company history, Hickory, NC based cable maker CommScope is buying a Georgia telecommunications equipment manufacturer called Arris International for $7.4 billion.

In the consumer electronics world, the word "make" can be confusing. Look at the back of your iPhone - "Designed in California, Manufactured in China". That means that the design was done by Apple, but the manufacturing is actually done by Foxconn in China. Similarly, TiVo has designed most of our DVR's in the past, although not all of them, especially when we partnered with other CE manufacturers. However, we never "made" our own boxes. They were always made by contract manufacturers (SCI, Sanmina, Flextronics, etc.). Our partnership with ARRIS is more about TiVo getting back into specifying the features we need, with 3rd parties designing and building the final hardware. I think you will also see TiVo continue to have strong opinions in the area of industrial design.
