Once upon a time I could have sworn that most cable operators were required to provide cable cards to customers who requested them. I know the cable card is near dead but today I would prefer to use my retail Tivo rather than any cable company provided DVR. I've contacted the two cable operators available to me and thus far neither claims to have pricing that includes a cable card. (Buckeye Broadband & Spectrum)

    Thanks all.

Are cable operators required to provide CableCARDs? short answer is yes
Long answer is "unless they are small and get a waiver from the FCC"

Spectrum is required to provide them, use one of the CableCARD threads with FCC contact information and reach out.

Buckeye Broadband looks like it may be an IPTV system (not unusual for a small, regional provider). If so, no cablecard for them. It does appear that they do have an arris-box powered by the TiVo interface, though.

    CableCARD: Know Your Rights

    FCC Complaints
Spectrum is required to provide cable cards. File the complaint, you will hear from Spectrum is a day or two, or give up.
PS. You can do the complaint online...no call necessary.

Thank you to everyone for the reply. Buckeye Broadband is in fact not IPTV, although their name and marketing could leave one to question that. They are my current cable provider and while I'm happy I have been told I can reduce the price of my service, but only if I turn in the cable card and opt for their Tivo branded DVR rental. Maybe I'm being hard headed but I don't want their Tivo box I want my own.

I had a package like that for a couple of years to save money. I happily took the free POS DVR they gave me, immediately disconnected it and let it sit in my closet for 2 years. Got an additional cable card anyway. I don't see how they could deny you adding more cards/boxes on top of their deal. After all, there's a cable card inside their Tivo too.

Why haven't you gone ahead and filed the FCC complaint? It sounds like they should be required to provide cable cards on their system. File the complaint and you will find out for sure in a couple days....or continue to do nothing!

Not sure what thread you were reading but the issue here has nothing to do with what is being charged for a DVR or it's cost vs a cablecard! The OP wants to get a cable card and was told by 2 ISP's that they don't have them when one, Spectrum, does for certain and it sounds like the other one, Buckeye, does.

Your surmise is correct, I was reading another similar thread where OP was complaining that his ISP was giving a discount for customers that took the bundled DVR and as you suspected I replied to the wrong thread.
