Matt Smith! I've never heard of him, but hopefully the series is established enough that he won't damage it.

Interestingly he has done 2 costarring roles with Billie Piper (Secret Diary of a Call Girl and The Ruby in the Smoke). I wonder if there is any connection.

This is a strange and inexplicable choice, which makes me happy. I was hoping for Patterson James, who would have been a sign that they were going in a different direction with the character (as opposed to last time, when they replaced Eccleston with Eccleston Lite--although eventually Tennant grew out of that). This Matt Smith guy seems like a similar sign.

Considering the announcement of the new Doctor was made today on BBC television during Doctor Who Confidential, your source is definitely impeached. :)

    It's Matt Smith.

Is it just me or does that guy look....strange? Kind of Cro-magnon?

Whatever it is, he reminds me of:

Not that they are separated at birth, but they both have that weird look.

I'm not seeing either of these. The only thing I notice is the annoyingly stupid Flock of Seagulls bangs he's sporting. I sincerely hope they make him get a haircut before filming.

I deleted my post after re-reading the Gaiman post. He was wishing it was Patterson Joseph and linked to an article with Matt Smith being named. The article he mentioned with Patterson was an old one, that he mentioned was incorrect(I just misread everything).
    Sorry for the confusion.....

edit, and according to Neil's blog, I am not the only one that misread it, so I don't feel quite as stupid as I did last night.....

    :D

In all seriousness, though, I'll still be watching Doctor Who, especially since Steven Moffat's taken over as showrunner. I'm a huge fan of Coupling and Jekyll was amazing.

Good call. He does favor him a bit.

And now I'm nostalgic for and miss once again the 2000 SCI FI series he was on, The Invisible Man. I thoroughly enjoyed that show. Cool... Season One is on DVD (it ran for two seasons on SCI FI); the entire series is on Hulu.com. Interesting.

    But I digress.

I guess the older, avuncular Doctor paradigm is out the window.

I am soooo going to miss David Tenant. I'd never watched Dr. Who until TiVo suggested a couple of episodes about a year ago. I've been hooked ever since.

I do enjoy (on DVD) the first season of the new series, with Christopher Eccleston, but, for me, David IS the Doctor.

It's been headed that way since the reboot. The doctor is trending younger and the companions are being played more as friends and love interests than as protégés. I'm not sure I like the trend, but I'm more than willing to give Moffat the benefit of the doubt when it comes to compelling stories and interesting character development.

    ???

This guy is the new youngest but the prior one was Peter Davison, who was in the first series.

Eccleston was right in the "normal" age range (he was 41; most of the Doctor's were in their 40s).

So, how is it heading that way since the reboot?

    Eccleston: 41
    Tennant: 34
    Smith: 26

Certainly seems like a post-reboot trend to me!
