I bought The Batman Season 1 on amazon instant video and downloaded the season to my tivo. It's a 16:9 show but SD as its older. I was surprised to see the show displayed with black bars all around. I couldn't use any of the TiVo aspect ratio controls to fix this.

    Is this normal?

I bought and downloaded an HD show and it filled my screen properly. Can anyone confirm the frame rate and audio (channels and quality) of newer HD shows when downloaded to the TiVo through amazon?

    Thanks!

My experience with Amazon has been that the SD movies have black bars all around and the HD movies are either black bars top/bottom or full screen. Don't know why the SD movies have the black bars all around because if they're widescreen they should display just like the HD movies but in a lower resolution. Therefore, I never rent or buy SD movies from Amazon.

If you are talking about the Batman series from the 1960s, its only 4:3/SD. There weren't any HD TV until the 2000s.

Most of the HD shows I download and watch from Amazon on my TiVos are in 1080P24 and DD 5.1.

If you enable Select-Play-Select-Replay-Select backdoor while playing back a video you will get some information on the screen about the video being played including the resolution and frame rate. I recently downloaded Breaking Bad season 5 HD episodes from Amazon and they were all 1080p/24 and looked better than any cable TV HD channel that I record even though file size for a 47 min episode was just under 2GB. Looks like Game of Thrones will be my next series to download from Amazon since Netflix doesn't have them for streaming (and renting Netflix Blu Rays for a whole series is too much of a PITA).

Try going to live TV, press aspect until you are in ZOOM mode, then go back and play the Amazon video. This trick used to work on mangled Netflix videos. It may work on Amazon ones.

That's because Netflix is an HME application (Flash for series 4 TiVos) that doesn't honor the zoom button, so to change aspect ratio you had to exit out to TiVo GUI and then return to Netflix. Amazon is different - it downloads video to your TiVo and you play it using normal GUI.

FWIW, you can change the aspect ratio while in the old Netflix player, or other HME apps, by using the discrete network aspect ratio codes (now mapped to the "Aspect" button in my remote program). I don't think it works for Flash apps, though.

For programs that already come in postage-stamp format from the source, there's nothing you can do from the TiVo, but some TVs have a zoom mode that can handle it.

Which button is "Replay"? I tried the instructions above but probably not pressing the right one for Replay? I tried this while watching a Netflix video and nothing happened?

Enter that sequence while watching a recorded video, not in Netflix interface. Replay is the 8 second skip back button.

I tried this sequence multiple times and I guess there is more to it than I thought because nothing is changing? I read somewhere that you have to do a "backdoor" but not sure what that meant or if it's somehow different using a Premiere.

"Replay" button is the one under the << button (REW).

I finally got this to work and I like it a lot. :) Did I read somewhere that you have to reboot the TiVo to get rid of it or can I just repeat the sequence?

Repeating the sequence gets rid of it.
