Yes you can still stream UHD at that lower bitrate. There are multiple encodes for each resolution. 16Mb/s would only be the highest encode used.

Interesting that Amazon is offering lower bitrate (i.e. more compressed) UHD encodes. Does their more compressed UHD stream actually look any better than their relatively less compressed best-quality 1080p?

Seems like Amazon's strategy with different levels of video quality is all over the place lately. They used to (for some reason) have different listings for the UHD version of a title versus the HD/SD version. So, even if you had super-fast internet, you wouldn't get UHD unless you chose the version labeled "UHD". Now it seems like they've fixed that, with just one listing per title and they'll automatically figure out which version to give you. Except the info they provide as to which version you're getting doesn't sound like it's too reliable. And, as I say, I wonder if their lowest-bitrate UHD version actually looks better than a 1080p version at about the same bitrate.

I have yet to see only one listing for a title. I still need to play a title listed as UHD to be able to play the UHD encodes. If I choose the version without UHD, then I can only play back at 1080P.

I used to have to select UHD versions of amazon shows, but now those no longer appear for me and I see only one listing. However I did confirm last night that it's still streaming in 4k. FWIW I have a bolt+ with old UI.

Don't be so sure of that - as my testing in the past few days has shown, the Amazon app on my Bolt switches to 2160/24 output no matter what program I select, even when there is no way at all it could be 4K source. It seems that they have just decided to try and fool us all by hiding what they are really streaming.

This is almost the same thing as setting your Bolt Video output to a fixed 2160 and then tuning in a TV program that is being broadcast at 480i - seeing the TV say that it is receiving a 2160 signal from the Bolt does NOT make that program a 4K source! The big difference here is that the current Amazon app is a LIE - it switches the output to 2160 even when you have not set the video output to a fixed 2160.

Just click play when in the app watching a show. If it doesn't say "Ultra HD" then it's not 4k. The Amazon app is currently not playing in 4k anymore. It used to, but it stopped a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't considered that amazon would be doing the scaling. I was just looking at what was being sent to my receiver.

I'm a little late to this thread but I've always had issues with playing UHD content from the Amazon app on my Bolt. It would start playing (and register "Ultra HD" when paused) but after about a minute and a half it would result in the error message below. UHD content plays fine through the on board Amazon app on my TV so I've ruled out my network. Also, there's never (to my knowledge) been a way to choose UHD streams through My Shows - it always defaults to the 1080p stream. There's also this from Amazon's website:

    Supported Devices

At this time, UHD playback is supported on the following Amazon Video devices:

    • Amazon Fire TV (2nd Generation)
    • Roku 4, Roku Premiere, Roku Premiere +, Roku Ultra
    • Samsung Ultra HD TVs (2014 or later models)
    • Sony Ultra HD TVs (2014 or later models), and Sony Xperia XZ Premium mobile devices
    • LG Ultra HD TVs (2014 or later models)
    • Vizio Ultra HD TVs (2014 or later models)
    • Xbox One S
Our Bolts are not listed...perhaps that's the reason the Bolt stopped showing UHD content?

The Roku Streaming Stick+ isn't listed either. But it also has access to the Amazon UHD encodes.

This may be more of an Amazon issue than Tivo, we've just tried streaming 4k directly on the TV app (LG OLED) and the Tivo amazon app. Both are stuck at 1080p even on the Grand Tour Ultra HD specific episode. Pissing me off for sure...

Odd. I'm streaming UHD HDR through the Amazon app on my LG OLED right now.

Correct that was my bad, here is what I find, I'm using "The Grand Tour" as my test show:

    1. LG Amazon app - Find The Grand Tour and play it, it will play in 1080p
    2. LG Amazon app - Go down to UltraHD section and find The Grand Tour [UltraHD] it will play in 4k
    3. Tivo Amazon app - If you search/find The Grand Tour and play it, it will play in 1080p
    4. Tivo Amazon app - No UltraHD Section, you can't find any ultraHD shows via the search
    5. Tivo Amazon app - Now that you've watched Grand Tour [UltraHD] on the LG app, it shows up in watchlist, try to play it, it will only play in 1080p

There ya go... for whatever it is worth...

I just tried several UHD shows from Amazon on my Mini Vox. Including the Grand Tour. They all played the Ultra HD encodes. Which show up as "UltraHD" below the scrub bar while streaming.

And when I tried the non UHD versions of those titles, they all played in "HD 1080P".

I also have a section that lists "Amazon Original Series in 4K Ultra HD"

and I bet most of you would not be able to tell the 1080 vs 4k stream anyway on a set several feet away, thats why you have to look at the info screen. If 4k streams were really all the much better, you'd tell right away.

I dont care about 4k from Amazon, its all garbage original programming, all dull and lack luster with lousy modern actors anyway.

Now Bill Nye Saves the World on NutFlicks 4k is really nice!!

WHen I viewed those shows it was extremely obvious when it was playing a UHD encode and when it was playing a 1080P encode. There was easily more detail from the UHD encode. WHich is typically the case. But I also sit at a distance from the TV where I can easily see the benefits of the extra resolution. Most people sit much farther away where you can't resolve that extra resolution.

Of course then if you look at a UHD BD it looks even better than the streamed content.

I enjoy many of the Amazon original shows. And I enjoy even more original programming from Netflix. There are many shows that are easily better that much of the content on broadcast TV.

The Mini Vox uses a different Amazon app due to different hardware than the Bolt and the old Minis.
