IIRC, it's in the rules, if they aren't U-turning anyone, they are supposed to announce it. So even if they can't U-turn anyone, I think they are still supposed to announce it, or maybe they aren't sure and do it just so they are following the rules.

Wendiness, you can fix it yourself by clicking "Edit" button on the first posting, then click the "Go Advanced" button. That will allow you to fix the title.

Exactly. I know it was said in the heat of battle but to me they lost a little of their luster.

That only works for a limited time after the thread is created. After that, doing so will change the title of the post itself, but not the name of the thread that shows up in the forum's thread list.

At least one team said "We chose not to U-turn anybody ... since both U-turns have already been used."

I thought that was an OK move. I'd have been happier if they hadn't come in first though as I was tired about them complaining about not getting first last time. The fact that they were only in the running at all due to the express pass or whatever it's called is something they never brought up.

As they were in first place they didn't need to U-turn anyone to keep from being eliminated. But by firming up their first place spot they were for sure going to get the 1st place prize. That was pretty good instant gratification.

    Those rabbits were adorable! :)

We are impressed by the grandparents and their story. Would they be the first older couple to win (if they win)?

I would have u-turned the strongest team. In this case, the snowboarders. It's better to give every disadvantage possible to the team who could wind up beating you if they are in the finals. I would have have u-turned them last week and this one also if I had the chance. I have never understood why any team would ever choose not to use a u-turn.

I'm sure you can look this up on wiki or somewhere. . . but I don't remember any couple older than their 40s winning the whole thing. Chip and Kim and Uchenna and Joyce were both 40ish.

But some "older" couples have gone pretty far -- Don and MJ and Meredith and Gretchen come to mind. I can't remember how far they made it but they were both memorable older couples who lasted a good while. The killer fatigue really factors into the later legs though and older couples inevitably lose steam.

Ron was older, and he made it top three, but he was paired with daughter Christina. I don't know if he's the oldest though. There was also Teri and Ian of the paper underwear fame, and Ian might have been over 50.

I was wondering before that whether they could do that.

I don't think they should be able to.

It's like somebody finding that board before doing any task, and u-turning somebody.

They're not done, so they shouldn't be able to do it.

To me that is very short sided. Snowboarders have been kicking butt and I would not want them in the Final 3. The grandparents have been fairly consistent but I think I would have a better chance against them. Just my opinion.

Ernie and Cindy were playing to win this leg, not the race. They have been in contention multiple times only to lose to an avoidable error. They wasted their Express Pass thing last week and pretty much wasted their U-Turn this week, but they did get their win for a leg.

Not shortsighted, they'd be firing blind. The snowboarders weren't around so they had no idea where they were in relation to the other teams and whether it would eliminate them or just annoy them. If you think annoying someone gives you an advantage, then I'd say go for it. They were far enough ahead at that point though that they just didn't know what was going on behind them. We've seen lots of teams not get eliminated after being U-turned either because they still got there in time or it was a non-elim with a bunch-up the next morning.

In general I'd say U-turning has had a low rate of return.

Sure they didn't know where the snowboarders were, but if you want to give the best team every disadvantage you can that is allowable by the rules. Again if the snowboarders make it to the final 3 (and I think they easily can, especially with Amani and Marcus and Jeremy and Sandy still in it) they will I think easily beat any of the other teams left. The only downside I see is with the possible memory portion in the final leg.

Are you sure there has been a leg that both included a U-turn and was non-elimination?

I say there is no downside to using a u-turn. Use every advantage you can. It's $1 Million.

Any disadvantage you create for them is temporary. Within a leg or two, there will be an equalizer and they'll be at your elbow no matter what. Do you really want them mad at you, too?
