Richard Branson's The Rebel Billionaire was in HD a few years ago.

Argh. That's right. I HATE that. I wish they put TAR back on Tuesdays where it belongs.

(Or was it Wednesdays? ;) )

I wish they at least switched to 16x9. Most cameras have that function. Maybe they have a reason no to do that? (tight shots in taxicabs etc.)

    A few others:

    Hell's Kitchen
    Shear Genius
    American Idol
So You Think You Can Dance
    Dancing With the Stars

But yeah-- for the most part, reality shows shun HD except for the performance-based ones like AI for some reason.

The funny thing is, don't they video tape this show (i.e., they don't use film, they use tape)? My HV-20 tapes at 1080i in Widescreen at 24 fps (for that it looks like it was filmed effect). It looks fantastic if properly lit. It cost about $900. Couldn't they just get a few of those and hook them up to their steady cam rigs? Sure they would need additional equipment but they need that no matter what cameras they use. They spend more on airfare going all over the planet with their equipment in a single flight than the cost of a decent professional HD camera ($5000?). It's not a researched argument so the numbers are pulled out of thin air.

I think what we will do is pad Cold Case be either an hour or 1.5 hours (now that my Expander is on the way). The only other show we record in the 10:00 hour on Sunday is, perhaps, Brothers and Sisters.

As we've discussed many times before, I think the cost of the equipment is a minimal part of the equation. A much bigger factor is the storage required, especially when the crews are scattered all over the world, and the editing facility/capabilities.

and with a team attached to each cameraman/crew and backup crews, it starts out with probably 12-15 cameras, thats without the location stuff, at least survivor is stationary.

It might happen someday, and yes at a min I'd be happy with 16x9, just glad to have the show back on air.

That used to be the case, but not anymore. HD isn't exactly cheap, but it's not as expensive as you think.

I can edit it on my iMac using Final Cut Pro. We aren't talking about anything that is super-complicated. At least, it doesn't look that way to me. Are you saying they edit it while on location?

Storage? I'll assume you mean the video tape. Well, don't they have to store the footage now? How is that different?

If we've discussed it many times before I either missed it or don't remember it. I'm not a DoP but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

It seems to get brought up at least once every season regarding Big Brother, TAR, and Survivor. At least we can stop the debate regarding Survivor ;)

I was thinking that same thing after I heard that Survivor will be in HD. I haven't watched Survivor in several seasons, but may give it a try again now that it is in HD.

Yeah, the next debate will question if it was a good thing after we've seen a few thousand dirty scratches, infected mosquito bites, open wounds, rats, insects, etc in HD. :)

From that "People" article linked above, about one team:

So, the show's producers are cruising the Internet for teams, eh? Wendy? :D

Nah, we wouldn't fight or see the race as a challenge to our friendship, so no wonder they haven't PMed us...

I think Les Moonves appreciates a higher class of Reality shows, for the most part, and this is at the top of the heap, so I don't know if it is really in danger.

As long as ratings don't drop a lot, I think it will be okay. At least for another season or two.

Well, they could always pull a briliant Rombuh move and choose to not eat and take the penalty...and get everyone else to do the same... :)
