It was actually bugging me that they were taking the time to kick at the loose hay after they'd unrolled it. No way the producers are going to try to weave the flag in with loose bits of hay. They would simply place the flag on the hay before it was rolled up, and the flag should be fairly easy to spot as the bale is unrolled.

And isn't that why Dan was yelling at his brother Sam? I could understand his frustration with Sam not listening to him. Since Dan had seen the competition before, either Sam should have listened to him or better yet, why didn't Dan do the task instead?

In case anyone was really curious and didn't otherwise look for themselves, it said:
Roll out the hay bales until
    you find a Race Flag.
    When you do, rejoin your
partner and run to the Pit
    Stop on the adjacent
    country road.

    Note: You may not take
    more than one Race Flag
    per team.

    Warning, the last team to
    check in may be
    eliminated!

    DON'T FORGET TO
    BRING YOUR GNOME!

Cheyne came across as a real passive-aggressive jerk. The editing made it seem as though, because she had yelled at him in the previous task, he let her take charge of the task of unrolling the hay even though anyone could have seen how physically strenuous that task would be.

I only hope that the two of them weren't watching this episode with her parents in the room. Awkward.

Was this rule really necessary? How likely would it have been for a team to unroll extra rolls of hay in order to grab more than one flag?

I don't understand why gloves isn't on the top of each team's list of things to bring. Seems like a pretty basic item.

Probably pretty unlikely. :) Although maybe if one team missed the flag, and moved onto another bale and another team noticed it and took it... I don't know, that seems pretty unlikely too. :)

well, if you're very strong, and are team number 1...there is really no reason not to keep unrolling and picking up flags and still check in at number 3 or even 4...

And since there were only 6 or 7 flags available, they didn't want someone unrolling hay when there wasn't a flag to be found!

Why would they have to bring the gnomes if it didn't mean anything? I know one season they had to bring them, and the winner of the leg won something special - at least that's what I'm remembering. Or maybe we would have seen some penalty had a team forgotten their gnome.

The last couple of gnome "product placements" didn't get them anything special for bringing it, but I'm sure if you didn't bring it, you had to go retrieve it before you could check in.

Ever since Travelocity has been the main sponsor for TAR, the gnomes have been a part of, at least, one leg

There was one season where there was a special prize sticker hidden on the bottom of the gnome so that a team not finishing first could still win a Travelocity prize.

I think they only did that once though.

    Maybe. :)

If a team arrives late while zero flags have been found, they definitely benefit (fresh body + better odds, but still the same odds as every team currently competing). But if 3 of the 7 flags were found as a new team arrives, they could be at a disadvantage (depending on how many bales were searched in order to find the 3 flags).

Given the choice, you'd want to be the first team to arrive, definitely. But sucks when late-comers find a flag before you.

If I was the producer I would always make sure the flag was on the bottom side of the hay as it was unrolled so it would always be under the hay it so you would have to kick it to find it.

Why is it "so unfair"? There are plenty of challenges that are purely luck or involve physical activity on TAR...this one is not that much different.

If the flag is on the bottom side of the hay as it's unrolled it will fall out and lay on top of the previous layer.

Which is to say, it is on the bottom as it's unrolled but it falls out on the previous revolution...

Exactly. As you're unrolling the bale, you see the part that's going to eventually be laying face down on the ground as it comes unrolled and goes over the top. Other than weaving the flag into the individual pieces of hay to ensure that it stayed hidden after being unrolled, there really isn't any way for the flag to be stuck in that jumbled mess of hay. It's certainly a higher percentage to just unroll as quickly as possible and move on to the next bale than it is to comb through every piece of hay.

Why was it unfair? Because the two girls who got kicked out because of it were some of the hottest in the history of the race and I wanted to see more of them. It was unfair to the viewers. ;) :D
