Netflix Removes Controversial ‘13 Reasons Why’ Suicide Scene
Season 3 starts next week! August 23rd!
I've never heard of this--is it good? You recommend it?
I do. It's a hard watch though so be prepared!
I watched Season 1. It was very good, but yes, very tough to watch. Looks like I need to watch Season 2!
And despite it being based on a young adult novel and being about teens I don't recommend it for teens. There are a couple of particularly tough scenes you can't unsee.
I think older teens 15/16+ would actually benefit from watching. I think seeing some of the issues that Hannah goes through may resonate with High School students. Yes, there are some tough scenes, but a lot of these things are happening in High School today. But, if you do let a teenager watch it, I would encourage discussion during and after watching.
FYI, NetFlix announced they slightly edited
Hannah's suicide scene
to make it less disturbing. But, there are still a number of other tough scenes.
That scene and
the hot tub rape
are the ones I was thinking of. I'm not normally particularly sensitive but those two scenes haunt me.
I would be okay with my teens watching it with me and skipping those two scenes. I don't think teens should have free reign with it.
Thanks--I'll check it out.
The scene from Season 2 was far worse for me. That legit haunts me.
bathroom broom scene
Yea, I had forgotten about that. I actually don't remember too much about S2. I didn't find it nearly as impactful as a season as S1.
I haven't seen any spoilers, but I am assuming that
will not play any part of this season? Her story seemed to close nicely at the end of S2.
I'm on S2E6. Do you know what episode that happens in? I'd like to skip it if I can without missing too much. I've seen scenes like that before and don't need another one.
Season 2 finale, S2E13.
Ah, right. I recall it as less explicit than those other two but I may be misremembering.
I've seen many rape scenes in other movies and the bathtub didn't really shock me after watching Dexter but the bathroom one was shown less but just the imagery it left in my head was far more shocking and upsetting for me.
I'm getting ready to start S2E11. It's been a good season. I probably should have rewatched S1 since it had been so long since I'd seen it, but I'm following along pretty well. It's just hard to remember what really happened in S1 vs other's perspective after the events.
Has anyone figured out a good way to handle a thread for Netflix shows since some binge at a faster rate than others? Just bite the bullet and have individual episode threads (ETA: for season 3) or groupings of episodes or just one big season thread? I'm willing to start season 3 episode threads, just not sure they'd get much action?
Single episode threads. This is a hill I will die on.
With a season thread those of us who can't binge on day one get left behind.
With episode group threads you're inevitably going to stop at the wrong point.
Say there are threads for every two episodes but you watch three. You can't post in the 1-2 thread because you might spoil something from 3. But you also can't post in 2-4 because you'll definitely be spoiled by something in 4.
With single episode threads you just post in whichever episode you finish in. In this case, 3. It's always been fine to post about earlier episodes so you can freely post about 1-3 in the thread for 3.
Thank you for posting the trailer. I usually don't watch previews or trailers but I had to know what the focus was going to be for S3 so I could decide if I really wanted to watch it.
Spoiler: End of S2/S3 focus
If the focus of S3 was going to be what happened at the end of S2, then I wasn't interested. But the last few seconds of that trailer mean I'm in! I thought that was going to happen at the end of S2! Even though this is in spoiler tags, I didn't want to be too spoilery in case someone who doesn't watch the trailer accidentally reads.
