Why do they need to explain it? No one on earth on the show knows what happened. So it's no big deal that the viewer doesn't know. The show isn't about why the people disappeared. It's about how the people left behind deal with it.

I'm sure the characters want to know!
That said, as long as the show runners are upfront about them not telling us, that's fine. I only wish they made the show more compelling. Having a bunch of sullen people moping around because of the situation with a feeling of gloom and nothing of consequence happening is pretty boring.
