Anyone watching @Midnight?

I love this show! I know the game show part is completely arbitrary, but it's really funny. However I noticed something weird. On occasion their points will jump around like they've rearranged the segments or cut out chunks. I wonder how heavily edited the show is? And I wonder if all the bits are really off the top of their heads, or if they get to prepare ahead of time?

Don't know if they get to see the questions ahead of time, but yeah, it's heavily edited. They said on one of the recent shows that "extended versions" of the shows are available to watch on Comedy Central's website.

This is one of those shows I generally don't watch right away, but binge watch 2 or 3 episodes at a time.

Chris has mentioned the editing on the show many times, but I'll give you points for mentioning it! I don't think the comedians get any prep time for the questions, so no points. Chris and/or the shows writers on the other hand do, points!
When they get a good group of "contestants"? The show is hilarious! I've listened to Chris's podcast. It's interesting how different he is there and on these shows. Almost like 2 completely different people.

I've listened to the Nerdist podcast since its beginning, and am also a big fan of the Comedy Bang Bang podcast. They have a ton of spillover with the Guests on @midnight. The guests on @midnight are some of the funniest people on the planet. The alternative comedy scene is blowing up, and a lot of the people who perform at Largo, and the UCB ( and this show) are all getting their own series. Check out Playing House and Review if you havent already. They're both hilarious shows featuring a lot of the comedians from the same cut. The Paul F episode from last night is unedited on the CC website today.

Been watching for a while, def love it! Chris has commented a few times when the flow went a certain way "well I guess we can't edit that out now!"

If you want a fake game show with comedians, check out Bunk. Incredibly funny! It ran for one season on IFC in 2012. It's available on Netflix.

My guess is that they let the comedians (and some non-comedians like the wrestler Chris Jericho) see the questions before hand. It gives them time to think of funny answers.

I've also noticed that any time the contestants have to write something on their tablets over the "commercial break", they never are writing what their final answer is. It makes more sense that they had come up with the answer earlier so that the show can prepare it for the big screen.

I've noticed several times especially with non-comedian guests that they'll look down as if reading the answers before saying them.

I've been to a taping, and the contestants "consult" with the show's writers during the commercial breaks. (I wasn't sitting close enough to hear exactly what the consultation consisted of, though.)

I've discovered that it's a really good show to watch off the On Demand menu whenever I have a free half hour.

I've been watching it since the very first one. It's "Must-See TV" for me.

I love it. I also suspect that the comedians have some advance prep, mainly because I can't believe they can be that funny, that fast.

I was doubly happy to see the episode with Dana Gould, who is one of my favorite comedians. As a bonus, I found out he has a podcast, which is pretty entertaining (if somewhat sporadic).

i watch and love it, too, and don't mind any consultations from the writers - i'd rather it continue to be funny than fail.

Alison Rosen (of the Adam Carolla Show) was on the show in the past few days, and talked about it on Adam's podcast.

Apparently they do get some prep time to write jokes. Not a TON, but some.. it's not all absolutely spontaneous.

That Paul F Tompkins that was on last night was hilarious. He seriously ran away with the points on that one. I know I've seen him before but can't place him and nothing on his IMDB page jumps out. Is there something he's been in recently I mig have seen him on?

Yeah, that was easily the funniest episode of the whole run so far.

Can't think of anything specific -- I first spotted him in "Mr. Show" about 15 years ago, where he played some minor roles.

I've seen him do stand-up live, and he caused my stomach to hurt from laughter.

Paul F. Tompkins is also one of the Workjuice Players on the Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast. He and Paget Brewster are the leads in the Beyond Belief segment, and Tompkins as Jib Janeen, Jupiter Spy in the Sparks Nevada Marshal on Mars segment had me in hysterics.

Paul F does great impersonations of Ice T, the Cake Boss, Gary Marshall, and a host of other characters. He's been on the comedy Bang Bang Podcast more than probably any other guest. He's been an extra on countless sitcoms like community, and Weeds and in There Will Be Blood. He was also on Mr.Show. I thinks he's the funniest person on the planet. I heard he has his own show in the works, other than the one he has on fusion, but I haven't heard anything lately.

Good point. It is great free advertising for them though. I've gone to see tons of people I never knew about due to hearing them on podcasts.

It's really just Bunk without props. Bunk was fantastic so it's a good comparison. Kurt Braunohler hosted Bunk and appears as a contestant on @Midnight.

I've seen all the eps of Bunk, and while I love Braunholer, I think the guests were inferior. It's a good show, but I like @midnight much more.

I started 'catching up' on them.. (on VLC on my ipad.. watching at close to 2x..)

BTW, if you haven't listened to the Judge John Hodgman podcast, listen.. it's awesome.. and thankfully, they are one of the FEW podcasts that has the whole feed, from the very beginning. I started a few months ago, and am currently on the Jan 1 episode of this year!
