Person of Interest - S4E05 - “Prophets” - 10/21/2014

In an evening filled with good television, Person of Interest still stands out.
I like the fact that the show is willing to go to the dark places and explorers the ramifications of the issues it raises.

Prophets starts out as a fairly routine episode with the number of pollster Simon Lee.
But as the episode goes on, you realize that the writers are peeling back another layer of POI Mythology.

The fact that Samaritan is rigging elections is a very scary revelation and another step in it’s taking away free will.

I appreciated the ways the team tried to protect Simon without blowing their covers and the gun battle that Root had with the Operative was great.

And while the team managed to save Simon’s life, they wound up destroying his self confidence.
For someone like Simon, one could argue that could be worse than killing him.

We got more layer peeling though with the characters.
While Reese didn’t have much to do with the number of the week, we did see him talk with the psychiatrist about Carter and her death.

We also found out that Ms. Groves changes identities (and clothes) every few days and not only does that cause a lack of human contact, her contact with the Machine is limited lest Samaritan find out.
The scenes with her and Finch were well done.

The last layer peeling concerned Finch and the genesis of the Machine.
I had often wondered why Finch had an inability to trust the Machine and why he had originally designed it to do the memory dumps and this episode showed us why.

42 previous versions were essentially untrustworthy and Finch was concerned about the “morality” of the 43rd iteration.
And this highlights the difference between the Machine and Samaritan. One has a moral/ethical compass while the other does not.

I do look forward to his conversation with the Machine.

Well, well. At long last we enter the unexplored territory foretold by the ending episode of last season. Samaritan is taking substantive steps to control and remake society while searching for The Machine. The Ragnarok battle of the Gods is beginning.

Root, "She's (Martine) in God mode now."

Beyond excellent flashbacks to Finch's adventures in "The Soul of a New Machine". Just when you think you already know everything about the backstory the writers offer additional informative insight. We can now better understand why Finch, the Machine's creator and Admin is so worried about his creation's potential behavior.

Just what was it that our Miss Groves was about to tell Harold that Shaw already knows? Hmmmmm....

I enjoyed most of season one, but in my opinion it started to go off the tracks when they introduced Samaritan and is now pretty much over the edge. The gunfight scenes (especially the one this week in the hotel) are outright silly and there are so many plot holes in every episode it's hard to keep a straight face.

And btw, the writers should know that governors (and other elected officials) do not take office immediately after a general election - nor are they referred to by their soon to be title, but as "title" elect.

Not just rigging it, but rigging it so the candidate Samaritan wanted ends up in power, even though he was not the one elected. And the fact that he is one of 58(?) that were elected in the rigged elections.

Other than having been hooked on the excellent character portrayals, the Samaritan AI theme is what attracts me most to this show which otherwise would be the 50th procedural mundane TV show.

Agreed, all POI fight scenes are somewhat silly, q.v. Reese's theme of confronting several armed assailants with invariably one being thrown through the window, and tiny Shaw kicking ass of much larger trained bad guys. The writers don't take themselves as seriously as the typical straight yet also unrealistic cop and agent TV shows.

There are many, many other TV shows that do not confront thought provoking leading edge societal and technical issues and have lots of "more realistic" (sic) fight scenes that should be more to your liking.

Now you see, defensive comments like that are simply not necessary. I'm not sure why a few folks on this board seem to think that unfavorable remarks about a show require a response like that. But hey - thanks for your concern about what might be more to my liking

To me whenever my TV lands on one of the CSI/L&O/NCIS/... shows, just nlistening I laugh that teh dialog and plot is so rote routine.
"Why did nn do (know about) xxx?" "HE'S TRACKING US."
"He's got a villain lair at nnn. Let's go!" "HE JUST CLEARED OUT!"
...

Person of Interest, even if it is a cartoon, at least has a fresher take on such.

I like stuff like the bearing and the appearance of the Samaritan guy and Elias.

"Mr. Reese. Miss Shaw. Miss Groves."
We all talk in a calm whisper

Maybe it was a special election. I believe most people elected that way take office pretty much immediately...

In addition to what Amenisia posted.

John refered to him as Governor-Elect.

Harold refered to him as Governor-Elect.

Perhaps the writers know that there is the political suck up and the media headline that is edited to fit the space.

Yeah, I thought of that. But since the governor (who was one of the candidates) was still alive and in office it wouldn't be a special election.

Recently in the U.K. there was a special election after the person in office resigned and was a candidate. Politics can be a complicated game.

I don't think Harold has the hots for Root. He simply is beginning to realize that she's no longer the sociopathic killer the team first encountered. The fact that The Machine was a major factor in her redemption has given him new pause for thought.

I DO think Root has the hots for Shaw.

That was my first thought as well, but I don't remember anything that would really hint at that. And with Shaw's issues with empathy, I don't see how Harold could be so sure that Shaw had picked on anything like that...

There was the line by Root with a certain look "I'll do yours if you do mine".

After the gunfight, etc. when we 1st see Shaw the writers have her first thing ask "How is Root?"

The other issue is that Samaritan had the Governor-elect killed.

Mind you, Samaritan could have done the same thing that Harold was going to do and expose her escort past, forcing her to step down and the weak willed "William Boone" would be in place.

But Samaritan had her killed because of that whole lack of a moral/ethical compass thing.

I think Root flirts with everyone, especially if she is about to shoot them or something.

I think that's kind of hot and that maybe there's something wrong with me.

We should remember how ruthless Root was. Top of my head as I recall, she held Harold hostage and threatened to kill a random security guard if he didn't play along. Didn't she execute that other guy she held?

This has been one character issue that still bothers me. Root grew up a sociopath, completely ruthless, uncaring. She would destroy lives and hack whatever she wanted. Killing was just a means to an end. She was ruthless as Samaritan is.

Then, within the space of a few episodes, she does a complete about face and is much more compassionate and caring.

I don't know, it just seemed way too out of character and way too quick a transformation for Root.

Maybe she was "transformed" by the power of the holy spirit? (i.e. the machine)

Precisely. She was transformed by The Machine. In this last episode she referred to the episodes way back when she was in the psychiatric hospital and The Machine started talking to her telling her NOT to shoot & kill people, forbidding her from doing so. From that time forward she has been a different person.

A key moment in this latest episode was Harold realizing precisely that, that The Machine had acted to transform a stone killer into someone who was now averse to killing. It lessened his fear of what The Machine had possibly become and motivated him to contact The Machine saying, "Lets' talk."

In an earlier Root episode, someone (Harold, I think) called Root a sociopath and she replied that she wasn't a sociopath, that she wished she was a sociopath because it would have made it easier to do some of the things she had to do.

Also promoting Amy Acker and Sarah Shahi to series regulars was an excellent move.

What izzit about Harold's AI machien designs that make them all knowing but unable to talk to humans (Root excepted?)

Now even Samaritan has to send speed reading test text messages, and we know that The Machine can only send Dewey Decimal coded for social security numbers.

Hey Harold, my phone can talk to me.
