The Astronaut Wives Club S01E01 - 6/18/2015 - "Launch"

Did anyone else watch this yet?

I thought it was just ok. I really wanted to like it, but I had a really hard time keeping track of who was who.

I'll probably give it another episode or so to see where it goes, though.

It seemed like the one episode covered a lot of time. The future episodes will need to really slow down.

Is it known that Alan Shepherd was a tramp? Seems like it would be hard on his family to have him presented that way on national TV. I'll give it one more episode.

Well, they strongly hinted at it in The Right Stuff. Apparently a few of the astronauts took advantage of their new found fame, much to the chagrin of John Glenn and some of the other pilots.

To me, they were making the wives look like catty, ambitious soap opera bitches.

I was a teenager during that time, but all we knew about them was what we read in Life magazine and the PR releases from NASA.

Very confusing. I found myself constantly referring to web entries about the show (who's playing who) and the astronauts' history. And I couldn't stop thinking about Dennis Quaid as Gordon Cooper in "The Right Stuff."

Also, T-birds for the guys and sedate little sedans (I forget which make and model) for the wives? Just goes to show, product placement has been around a long, long time.

Saw it. Thought it was OK.

They are moving pretty quickly, though.

Watched the previews for the season too.

Spoiler:

They don't slow down. It seems that for this season, they intend to get to at least late 1968 and Apollo 8 mission. They are going to have to either introduce a lot more characters or somehow tell the story using just the original Mercury 7 wives and astronauts

I love the close up shots of the Capcom. You can plainly see his headset cord is not even connected to the earpiece.

Corvettes for the men and station wagons for the wives.

Even though this is definitely a "chick show", I thought it was entertaining. Reminds me of the cancelled "Pan Am" show, probably because of the time.. (Checked imdb, it was set in 1964.. so a few years after this show started.)

T-birds! GASP!!! (Only cause I own a Corvette )

This show seems to be the part of the book they left out of the movie The Right Stuff. At least so far.

One nit for me was the wives wanted to do a 'surprise' visit. They show a Constellation (4 engines) taxiing, then a DC-3 (2 engines) taking off.

I want to like this show because I like the time period. It was okay. I really liked Pan-Am.

I didn't even recognize Yvonne Strahovski (from Chuck) as Rene Carpenter. Even when my wife pointed her out I couldn't see it.

I didn't realize she was so tall. Either that or all the other ladies are really short.

Wow--I didn't either. I did think she looked familiar.

I'm watching this show because Yvonne Strahovski is in it.

As well as Joanna Garcia and Odette Annabel.

Me too. I was meaning to look at IMdB to see where I knew her from.

I didn't recognize her at first when everyone was at the introduction party, but I might have later on in the episode. I did know who she was quickly after, though, because I kept looking at the cast list to remember who was who.

No further posts on this series that I can find so I guess I am in the minority but I have been enjoying this show a lot. The wives are all interesting and very varied. The guys are pretty much all hounds and not really important to the story line.

I was of college age during this time period so can identify with most of the situations. And while the depiction of the times is done very well, I am fascinated by the lives of these people, families, children. All military people so used to being away from home but the way these women are thrown together is a great story. They all have to support each other, their husbands are rivals but man-friends, the women sometimes see themselves as props but enjoy it and still dislike it. Just lots of things going on.

The Right Stuff focused on the men, as it should have, but this insight into what it must have been like for their families I find quite appealing. All Life magazine 'stars for a day'.

Loved the wife who took the centerpiece since 'it would just go to waste' after the fancy party.

I didn't start any new threads because I hadn't watched any of them yet. I caught up this week though and ended up watching tonight's right after it aired because my parents are here visiting this week and my mom watches it also.

you're not alone, i figured many were burnt out on space program period shows, but at the pace it's moving, i'm still in (a show behind).

It's moving at a very fast pace. How far along are we now? Four episodes? We already have met some of the "New Nine" wives.

I'm still enjoying it. They are mostly staying true to history. There's a minor inaccuracy here and there.
