Extant "Re-Entry" 07/09/14 (spoilers)

OK I'm in.

It's like part Twilight Zone, part Alien, part Rosemary's Baby, part Planet of the Apes, part Omen.

Is this a mini-series?

What's Halle Berry doing on TV anyways?

oh no Luka and Elenor Frutt

and that Damien kid is ... a robot!!!

ya all know that's an alien baby she's got.

Is the robot kid in the ads for the show the baby she came back with, or some other robot walking around? If it is they sure are spoiling things. I haven't watched it yet but it would seem a robot would have to be grown up from start, how would manufactured parts get bigger? Eating could provide energy to run a robot, but not to make parts bigger. No matter what you do with your Tivo, it never grows a bigger disk even if plugged in a long time......it can get smarter though, with the suggestions.....

No, the kid is a product of her husband's work in creating a 'humanix' (humanoid robot) with AI.

..and Cainebj, you forgot part Lost, too (the corporation reminds me of Dharma).

It was a little slow, but interesting enough to keep the curiosity going. SP set, for the time being, anyway.

I haven't watched yet, but I heard that if the mini-series does well that there is an option for additional seasons.

OK, good. I wonder though if those promos turned off some viewers because they thought the baby issue was being given away, so no need to see, and maybe they just thought it a poor mans Artificial Intelligence Spielberg movie ripoff and didn't tune in? I know that was my thought at seeing the promos. I am in to watch now. By the way it is repeated tonight (Thursday) on CBS if any missed it.

The first episode resulted in a SP set. It is also going to be on Amazon Prime. I just hope Extant turns out better than Under the Dome.

I could run live cam footage of an empty baseball stadium and it would be better and more compelling than Under the Dome.

See, I liked it, but all these people, comparing it with everything else under the sun are going to hurt the show.... Let it develop its own identity... Maybe?

But...but...how can you describe something without saying "It's like a cross between ____ and ____" or "It's like ____ in a ____"?

A guy on the RogerEbert.com website described it as a cross between A.I., LOST and E.T.

Ok, I get it.

But the thing is, this makes you form an opinion about the show before you even watch it. I want to form my own opinion.

What if I like it? Lord knows most summer fare is horrible (except what's on USA network), although lately both SyFylis channel and TNT have been trying.

The pilot seemed interesting. It's only a thirteen episode season. So I'll be in for the full season.

Now that Dr. Hatake has turned up, can a shadowy drug company be far behind?

I liked it but kept wondering why they'd send one person on a year long mission. I'd go nuts being alone for 13 months. I know it was so they could establish that she couldn't have gotten pregnant under normal circumstances but they could have done that with a small all woman crew.

Astro Boy is creepy.

Plus why such a large station has a one-person crew. You'd think they'd want to to be better-staffed, both to get more use out of it (it couldn't have been cheap) and as back-up (what if the one-person crew gets sick or incapacitated?).

That was enough of a plot-driven problem to almost take me out of the story...

Taking out the trash is way more complicated in the future than it is now.

In one of the reviews I read they talked about them doing solo missions to reduce the risk after some kind of accident that had occurred in the past with a multi-person crew. No idea if that is addressed in the show. But I would expect it to be since they do need to explain it.

Meh...I thought this was just so so. Berry certainly didn't do anything for me in the first ep. Hatake either for that matter. I'll give it a few eps but it's on a short leash.

I love that guy--he shows up everywhere. Cool accent. And Luka seems to sometimes have his accent and sometimes not. That's annoying. People with cool accents should definitely be allowed to keep them.

The thing I couldn't figure out is why she didn't watch, at least at high speed, the rest of the 13 hours she was blacked out! She watches only up until she passes out "upstairs", then wakes up in the outer module and she doesn't even watch to see what happened during that time?

Not going to happen because it going become Extant. I had to say it.

The show to me is a confusing mess. With SFX thrown in to make look make like mankind made progress in technology (not with Republican in office).

Let see we have female astronaut pregnant with who know what. X-Files
A Robot that look human and can feel - Almost Human
An evil corporation - Lost
A mad scientist/CEO - Helex

Feel free to add to the list.

What has happen, has happen before, and will happen again - Battlestar Galactica

Didn't delve into politics so don't know who is in office except that NASA has been privatized which presently is more favored by Republicans than Democrats. 35 years in the future a New Whig or a Progressive Libertarian could be in power.

Ditto. Summer used to be a wasteland with nothing but baseball and reruns. The independent networks started to see this as a huge opportunity and filled it with new shows. The major networks picked up on this as well, but haven't shown me much worth watching until Extant. Many of those shows ended up being broadcast during the regular season as well (i.e., Suits, Covert Affairs and a few others).

I look forward to many of the summer shows to fill the void, like Falling Skies and Franklin and Bash. I've enjoyed Tyrant so far and I'm anxious to see the premiere of The Strain this Sunday. I just wish they'd bring back Defying Gravity.

I've seen him in lots of stuff but it wasn't until Helix that I started recognizing him. Now I'm seeing him everywhere: in The Wolverine, as Dogen from the temple in LOST (just finished a re-watch), now this. He's popped up in three different shows I've seen over the last two days.
