Stephen Colbert to take over The Late Show

Quote:
The CBS Television Network today announced that Stephen Colbert, the host, writer and executive producer of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Colbert Report, will succeed David Letterman as the host of THE LATE SHOW, effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast. The five-year agreement between CBS and Colbert was announced by Leslie Moonves, President and CEO, CBS Corporation, and Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment.

Too slow, though in reality this seems like the best thread.

1. Is in the Happy Hour
2. is the David Letterman Retiring
3. Is the one correctly titled and, arguably, in the correct forum = this one.

Yes, fans of Colbert "in character" will miss his show, but the truth is that the format, despite being an excellent vehicle that launched Colbert to stardom, was far too limiting for Colbert's talent. He's absolutely going to blossom with this new freedom. From his time on Strangers With Candy to The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, he's shown his comedic talent in various forms with an improved performer's fluidity. That considerable talent will make him instantly watchable doing his own taped (and live) skits on The Late Show, plus it will serve him well behind the desk doing interviews.

Well, that was quick. What'd it take, a week to find a replacement?

I'm not a big Colbert fan but I'll watch a few eps to see how it goes.

Wouldn't expect him to be happy about them hiring someone who makes fun of conservatives for a living in a spot that had previously not been political.

I expect conservatives in general will be unhappy about it.

You realize it's a character he plays on a different show?

I've never actually seen him do anything except mock one side - so I won't be surprised if that side isn't happy to see in a prominent roles that wasn't previously political.

Well in the case of Limbaugh, he probably doesn't care. What he does care about is that Colbert was getting the news cycle and not him. He went on his diatribe simply to get in on the Colbert 15 minutes of discussion.

Whatever is the hot topic he will find some way to get in and be controversial.
What blueberries are blue! Its a secret scientific plot by democrats and Obama planned it in his youth. Obviously its stupid but its get people repeating it and that's all that matters.

That's why I'm really looking forward to seeing what he does with The Late Show. The guy is extremely talented, but he's been pigeonholed into his Colbert Report character for so long that most people assume it's fundamentally who he is as a person.

The Late Show will be just as "not political" as it was before, there is no change in that regard.

Colbert is an excellent choice and I cannot wait to see what he does with the show. He is a very versatile performer, and has a rapier wit. Kudos to CBS for putting an end to months and months of endless speculation!

That's like saying that you wished Martin Sheen didn't play Uncle Ben In The Amazing Spider-Man, because it was previously not political.

Sheen was politically active outside his role so I'm not sure that's a fair comparison - this is more like promoting someone known for anti-black or anti-woman humor and being surprised if blacks or feminists are unhappy about it.

There's a guy at work who doesn't seem to grasp that "Colbert" is satirizing the Bill O'Reilly type of blowhard.

Rush and others Cons are mad because they thought the Col-Bear character was real for very long time.

They hadn't been fooled that badly since Archie Bunker.

To be more exact Limbaugh went on this diatribe to a) provide the breaking news that Limbaugh is still on the air somewhere b) get his 5 minutes of what will be 15 years of Colbert.

For RL, this is as good a topic he's gonna get until Hillary is elected.

If you go back to Norman Lear's interviews back then, he said he got more complaints from liberals about how liberals were portrayed than from conservatives about Archie - not sure if that meant conservatives thought he was "real" or just fair.

While I think that Colbert is a fine choice, I kind of wish they'd made a more interesting choice, say someone like Aisha Tyler.

can't really place aisha tyler, but based on her imdb profile, there's scattered tv acting, one regular series, and one related writing credit. she's an untested risk considering the ad money at stake and competition in the time slot.

colbert fits the job, has tons of experience at that air time, will bring viewers to the new show, and will keep many existing viewers - he's an experienced choice, very little risk.

Dave only announced his retirement a week or so ago. How was there "months and months of endless speculation?"

Do you really think "Rush and other Cons" thought the Col-Bear character was seriously a die-hard conservative? How is that even possible, when nearly everything he says is essentially making fun of conservatives?

I think he was trying to say that CBS *avoided* months of speculation. It's much appreciated.

I hope this is a good move for Colbert. I enjoy his "character" on the Report, but have to wonder if he will be as entertaining out of character. Time will tell.

Pretty sure Tyler has done some hosting herself.
The Talk and Talk Soup come to mind.
