What unit is TiVo reporting recording sizes in?

When TiVo reports that a recording is 6.15 GB in size, is it talking about 10^9th bytes or 2^30th bytes?

Use Desktop to copy it to PC and see what size Windows says it is.

It's 2^30. Seeing the size of a downloaded file won't ever match what is reported. The size you get via TTG is different than the size stored on the TiVo. Through TTG there is a lot happening to the stream before it makes it to your computer: decrypt, demux, remux, re-encrypt. Most often you will see the final size downloaded to your computer will be ~5-10% smaller than what is stored on the TiVo.

Weird; I downloaded something (last night's episode of Family Guy). TiVo Desktop says that it's 2.795 GB; Windows Explorer file properties says that it's 2.72 GB (2,931,047,972 bytes; the file size, rounded out to full sectors is half a KB more). The file's byte total divided by 2^30 is 2.729. TiVo info on the recording says it's 2.79 GB, and TiVo Desktop's list of files which can be transferred says 2.86 GB. I wonder how TiVo Desktop derives its numbers?

Probably a guess. A moyekj said there is a lot that happens when you transfer a file so there is no way for it to know ahead of time exactly how big the file will be.

I think the original question was whether it's base 2 or base 10 units that the TiVo reports for a recording on the TiVo, regardless of whether it gets copied anywhere or not.

My secondary question was why I see so many different numbers from different places. It's obvious that it's giving me 2^30 units for GB, but I'm seeing 2.79 from the TiVo itself and the web interface, 2.86 from TiVo Desktop. Whatever.

Perhaps because the DRM differs depending on location and some reports may try to take that into account, and some not. There's also other overhead, including metadata, that may also throw things off.

The file gets changed when it's copied over, in terms of the encryption and file format and a bunch of other crap. So it's not surprising that it fluctuates a bit...
