Creating a vmdk image of my original TiVo hard drive to present to jmfs?

I usually use the jmfs ISO inside a VM under either VMware Fusion on a Mac or VMware Workstation on a PC to image larger hard drives to put into my TiVo Premiere. I usually have the two hard drives hooked up via SATA/USB adapters and sitting on my desk.

My original TiVo 320GB disk is over 4 years old, and although it works fine for now I know it will eventually fail due to a mechanical issue. Is there any way to create an image of the disk in vmdk format that I can keep somewhere else? That way I can mount that instead of searching for my original HD.

If you drop down to the command prompt in jmfs and use dd_rescue it should work. The virtual computer doesn't know it's not a physical drive.

You could also use DvrBARS on a PC to create a VHD file. I'm not sure about Fusion, but VMWare Workstation can handle VHD files. You wouldn't even have to use VMWare and jmfs at all unless you need to expand the drive - just restore it with DvrBARS.
