cable/tivo bill

I am confused. I pay $68 for cable, and my big cable box is free. so getting a tivo would really increase my bill, $68 plus tivo plus a cable card?

If you return the Cable Co's Box you should receive credit for the Cable Card.

If the cable box is bundled with your cable plan you should get a "customer-owned equipment credit" if you return the cableco's box and replace it with a TiVo. Likewise, the first CableCARD should be minimal cost (i.e., free). That will knock down the monthly cost, but TiVo will probably not save a lot if you go with a monthly service plan on the TiVo - paying for lifetime service is more cost effective if you can swing the cost.

A cable box is not equivalent to a TiVo. You should at least be comparing how much your cable company would charge you to rent their DVR.

ok, so it's an even swap, cable box and cable card. is 1 advantage with TiVo that I can watch/tape 2 different channels from the 1 cable input? currently I need a second box to get 2 channels.

All HD TiVos have 2 or more tuners, the current Roamio models come in 4 tuner & 6 tuner versions. The older Premiere models come in 2 tuner & 4 tuner versions and all of the even older Series 3/TiVo HD models are dual tuner models.

One of many advantages.

2 or 4 tuner models with the Premiere generation of Tivos,

4 or 6 tuner models with the Roamios

Plus S3s and at least some S4s can also get OTA channels, some of which your cable co might not carry.

Premieres and Roamios can only get on-demand in certain areas with Comcast.

Only in certain areas and only when it feels like working, at least on the system I'm on.

With Comcast, you get, IIRC a $2.75/mo credit for not using their equipment. Not great, but it's something. That's on top of not having to pay for DVR fees per month, which are $17 or $18/mo IIRC.

Yup, I just checked mine is $2.50. Their bills have to be the most difficult things to read. The way they do credits and charges is incredible. They must have a whole team of accountants just trying to figure out how to make the bills as hard as humanly possible to actually read!

Although they seem to have also confused themselves, and they didn't increase the price for months 12-24 of my online deal. I'm not going to complain!
