Community - 'Re-Pilot'/'Introduction to Teaching' 1/2/2014 S05 Ep 1 and 2

Community returned tonight with Dan Harmon back at the helm.

I enjoyed both episodes. Thankfully I hadn't deleted my season pass last year and this was recorded for me. thanks tivo!

Love the addition of Jonathan Banks, but then I loved him on Breaking Bad and way back with Wiseguy.

Magnitude's 'pop pop' during the riot was great.

And I loved Abed's Nick Cage.

And I love Kevin Corrigan so it was good to see him again.

what's you think

I know Chevy Chase isn't on the show anymore. How did he get written out of the show? Did he die last season? I was surprised to see his hologram guy.

So, he graduated and will just never been seen again? Based on last night's episodes, it seems like they all graduated, yet are all back.

I wish my memory wasn't such crap. I don't remember anything about last season.

Honestly I felt like it was "off" in much the same way last season felt off. I guess the transition back to Harmon is as jarring as the transition away, plus the awkwardness of the contrivance of getting them all back is not adequately covered by Abed being meta about it. Still, some good moments, and well worth keeping it going.

Despite being a huge Harmon fan, these were far from the best we've seen. Not terrible but just very few LOL moments.

It was good to have the show back, but it didn't really blow me away (episode 1). I'll watch ep 2 this weekend.

These episodes were much improved. I laughed several times. It definitely felt like the old Community.

Yes, the show moved ahead about a year from Jeff's graduation. He's had enough time to wash out in law, and everyone else graduated and found their degrees weren't worth anything. So they are all back to try again.

Pierce has been written out. I think it was a surprise to all of us that Chevy Chase did the hologram cameo. I won't miss the character, but these episodes were so good that I'm really disappointed that

Spoiler:
Donald Glover is leaving the show too, in just a few more episodes. The show feels the same without Pierce, but I don't think it will without Troy.

The hologram explained that due to some kind of harassment incident (that took place off-screen), Pierce is subject to a permanent restraining order preventing him from ever coming on campus again.

I think Winger should face some blowback for immediately running down the hall to tell Annie about what "minus" means.

You'd think Buzz would take some action about that. Bar him from the teachers lounge. Lock him out of the office. Set his car on fire. Something.

I agree that it was a strange transition and the explanation for how they all got back to Greendale was very contrived. But given the way the show ended last season, and the fact that this is the fifth season of a show about people at a community college, pretty much any explanation they could come up with to get the bulk of the characters together at the school would be a contrivance.

I'm just glad the show is back. #SixSeasonsandaMovie

So, having realized that their bachelors degrees from Greendale were worthless, they've re-enrolled to get their masters?

I didn't love the "Repilot" episode but I also hated the original pilot. I only watched this show because of the people here talking about it all the time. I had watched the original pilot when it aired and quickly dismissed the show.

I think Harmon has better episodes in store.

I fully expected for someone to say that Pierce had been hit by a bus in the interim (in fact, I first thought that's what they were alluding to when they showed the empty chair and Magnitude comment), so I was surprised when they did show the hologram.

Maybe NBC won't let Harmon kill off the character.

Not really. A lot of people at community colleges are just taking classes. Some get degrees but the kind of degree they are making it appear on the show is obtained by transferring to a full college at some point.

Sure, many people at community colleges aren't going full time. But that's not the case for the main characters on this show. As far as we know, they've all been going to school full time for the duration of the series.

Also, I'm pretty sure there are community colleges that offer bachelor's degrees.

That was a weakness of the original concept. Why were they focused on doing degrees in four years? They didn't have to do anything with it at all. Why did they all "graduate?" The old guy didn't.

Nobody does self-referential meta like Community. And Harmon. These weren't knock it out of the park great, but I thought they were very good. A- material. And any Pilot (RePilot) takes some time to jell.

Glad it's back.

Harmon is so good, it did feel like the old Community.

The best joke in the two episodes is probably the one that very few will get, which is that Harmon touch
.
Spoiler:
The joke about Troy getting mad that one of the characters left Scrubs after six episodes even though the show made him. Donald Glover leaving after six episodes and "turning his back on the show after it made him" is that Harmon meta-humor that was missing last season.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Harmon has planned for the rest of the season.

I had just heard about that earlier in the day so I did get a sad chuckle out of that joke...back to the meta jokes of the "old" Community...

I also enjoyed Danny Pudi's impression of Nicolas Cage....he is so talented and underrated! I just love him!

I'm just reading the latest issue of EW and their review of the first two episodes says this season is set three years after the S4 finale.

Good to know, thanks. It was obvious we had moved ahead and I just guessed a year. A little more than that makes sense.

And how were we supposed to know that? Did they mention it was 3 years later somewhere in the episodes? If so, I missed it.

I liked the second episode much better than the first one and I laughed out loud several times. I liked the Scrubs reference and how it not only links Glover's situation but was a portent to come with what would happen to Winger. I'm guessing Harmon is a big fan of Lawrence's work? (Cougartown and Scrubs mentions). I do get how the first episode was the setup to the rest of the season. I heard John Oliver is going to be in some episodes. I thought they might open with that, since that would be similar to how the pilot opened.

Who did the Zach Braffian voiceover at the end? Was it Abed?

I definitely chuckled at that, but I thought the funniest joke by far was when the teacher tells the class how Abed drove a prior teacher crazy by proving that there was indeed an answer to the question "Who's the Boss?".

I'm just really glad to have the show back. Even at its worst, it's still better than 95% of the other comedies on TV these days.

Isn't that something that had actually happened in a previous episode?
