60 Minutes 12/19/10

60 Minutes had an amazing story tonight about people with "superior autobiographical memory", including Marilu Henner. These five people are able to remember minor details about almost every day in their lives since their youth. It's not just what day of the week it was, but where they were, what they ate, what they experienced on that day.

Truly remarkable and a must watch. Real insight as to what the human brain is capable of. Even moreso than the music savant story they always replay, which is also awesome.

Pretty freaky wasn't it. I liked Marilu's comment that her ability made it so that she never lost an argument and that maybe that's why she was on marriage number three.... ;-)

For those who didn't see the program, here is the story, and the video.

I thought it was very interesting, and even slightly more interesting that there was someone famous in the group.

About 3 weeks ago, I read a short story about this - a man who couldn't forget. I'll try to find the exact name if I still have it (I can't remember that far back).

Pretty amazing ability. I know there are drawbacks, but I'm jealous.

The doctor being interviewed mentioned that they weren't sure which was the better way for the brain to be, to hold onto all of its memories, or to have a natural fading of the memory. On the one hand, being able to recall so much is definitely useful, but also having such strong ties to the emotional feelings from those memories as well, maybe not so much.

I remember seeing Marilu on Later with Bob Costas years ago and he decided to quiz her on this, and the first date he picked was the moon landing, and she began blushing and asked him who told him to pick that date. He said he just pulled it out of the air, and it turned out that was the day she lost her virginity.

What amazed me was that Leslie Stahl had started working on the piece, realized that her friend Marilu might belong to this group, and brought her to their attention. Is that serendipity or what?

That was incredibly interesting. I swear I've seen someone with this ability before on Oprah or something similar several years ago. She counted it as a bit of a curse because of the emotional ties to some dates. Losing loved ones, having arguments with people, etc. She claimed that the emotions conjured up by some dates made her too raw.

OMG-I remember that too!

I have a pretty good memory (If I say so myself), which comes in handy in my profession (pharmacy), but nowhere near as good as these people. Fascinating!

The woman who was on Oprah was shown briefly on the 60 Minutes piece. She was walking with one of the reporters; had reddish-brown shoulder length hair. They were saying that some people think this is a curse (she is one of them).

I'm glad someone else thought of this. This was what I thought of when they first brought up Marilu Henner. The funny thing was the way she was behaving on the episode -- like totally freaked out..

(Oh we need Costas back doing a talk show!)

BTW, I forget if it was this episode or the one the week before, but one of these episodes had the show aired (on the West Coast) and the (audio) podcast as different shows. I still record it, but delete it after I listen to the podcast.. Yet one story was different between the two.. and the order of the other stories was different.

Bump

60 Minutes did an update to this story tonight. Several dozen more people have come forward with this ability. Focus was on young people with this ability. Most interestingly was an 11 year old who has an identical twin, but is much better at this type of memory. Overall the research has shown a more active pathway between the front and back of the brain. It's not that they are better learners, but that most of us forget most things while they retain it. Their innate retrieval mechanism seems to be much better.

I wish they would touch more on the bad side of the talent, having to relive bad memories, and give the kid some advice on that.
