TiVo Desktop user wants access to videos via Mini

Hello,

I have over many years accumulated a large collection of videos (some .tivo and some mpeg2) which I had always used TiVo Desktop (Windows XP) to transfer to TiVo DVRs.

Now I have a Mini and would like access to that library directly from it too.

What do people use with the Mini that is as simple as TiVo Desktop to use and set up on a modest Windows XP machine?

You're only option, as far as I'm aware, is the Plex app...

TTG, pyTiVo and even StreamBaby require a hard drive in the unit to function and since the Mini doesn't have an hard drive they wont work with it. Plex is the only streamer app I know of that works with a TiVo Mini

One of the first things I saw related to a free windows server download was a Vista requirement if I understood properly, so that rules out my XP.

Does it show up on the Mini as a TivoDesktop like server but without the red circle/slash?

Is it complex to install or set up on a windows machine, or as simple as telling it to offer certain folders?

Are there difficulties with streaming to a mini that recording TiVoes don't have preventing the other apps developed in the past from streaming to a mini?

Is there a reason TiVo lets a mini schedule a recording on its Roamio but doesn't let it start a transfer via TiVo Desktop to its Roamio?

Of course you will also need a Plex Pass. Which costs $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year to use it. Or $149.99 for lifetime access.

A solution by the community or TiVo itself that lets the user start an old style transfer to the TiVo DVR from the PC using the Mini would really solve the whole thing.

I don't think that community developed Plex app requires the Plex Pass. The offical Plex app they just announced for the Opera stire, whcih isn't available on TiVo yet, will though.

Unfortunately that's not possible. There is no way to initiate a transfer from PC to TiVo or TiVo to TiVo programatically. You can "push" videos from a PC, but the resulting videos are not allowed to be streamed to a Mini so that's not an option.

Does it? Didn't know that. Last I'd read it still needed a disk to buffer, which meant it only worked on real TiVos.

What about vidmgr and pyHME that was posted about in the last 24hrs in the HME forum referring to sending a video to a TiVo?

Will check into streambaby.

While pushed recordings are marked copy once, that shouldn't prevent streaming to a Mini.

Still needs a buffer. You can execute a push from the mini and then switch to my shows and watch it as it is transfers to your DVR.

Right, the transfer option in Streambaby works on the mini, not the direct stream option. You can then watch the trasferrred video from that same mini while it is being transferred. All of Streambaby's graphics and menus work on the mini just fine. This accomplishes the desired result of being able to watch any of the videos stored on my server from a mini.

Would be nice if the protocol that netflix and amazon use or the MRS protocol could be documented to the user community so that an app like streambaby could stream directly to a mini.

That Plex app I linked to in my first post can stream directly to the Mini without using the TiVo as a buffer.
