Removed External now Bolt won't boot - any advice?

Long story short, I no longer have the external drive that was attached to my Bolt. And unfortunately, I did not dismount it correctly before it was removed. Now, when I attempt to start the Bolt I get an "External Drive Missing" warning. I follow the instructions for "If you no longer wish to use the external storage device with this TiVo box, press Clear." Then I follow the instructions for pressing Thumbs Down three times and hitting enter. Unfortunately, the Bolt just keeps rebooting and winds up on this same dialogue page. Anybody have any assistance they can offer? Thought I'd try here before calling TiVo. Thanks.

You evidently have to have your remote in IR mode for the un-marrying process to work.

Press and hold tivo+RedC buttons to force IR mode
Press and hold tivo+GreenD buttons to reverse the procedure (enable RF) when done.

Is it really that simple? I'm on hold with TiVO right now and the guy is telling me I might need to swap Bolts!

This is unbelievable. I need to exchange it for a new one because of this. My apologies to anybody I ever criticized for suggesting an external HD was not as beneficial as an internal. How the f**k can this be the only possible solution?

If you want to try removing the drive and see if you can delete any volumes or partitions and then reinstall in the Bolt. Might be worth a try before you pack it back up but either way you already lost your recordings.

Yup, sure have. In which case I'll just exchange for a new one since at least they aren't charging me anything for it. Thankfully that's the Bolt that doesn't have many unwatched recordings on it.

So basically know this - if you have a drive attached to the Bolt and it dies, or you get rid of it without properly unmounting it, you might be really, really p-oed with the result.

Will Tivo accept the return if they notice that the case has been opened?

Not sure if you are kidding or not, but unless the case is obviously damaged, no.
