No question anymore about where John Hurt falls in the timeline.

Wow. That really makes me wish we could see more of McGann.

Not that there was really much doubt, unless they were going to go for the truly bizarre. Between McGann and Eccleston is the only place Hurt could easily slot in.

Which raises the issue of how many regenerations he's really had, especially if you count Tennant twice. Capaldi will be either 13 or 14. Assuming there's nothing between Hurt and Eccleston, of course.

Yeah, that sounded like fan service, or maybe fan DISservice...it will end the annoying debate over whether the Doctor can be female, although not the even more annoying debate over whether he SHOULD be female.

So we now have an official name for the Hurt Doctor (per the credits) - he's the "War Doctor."

And now that we definitively know where on the timeline the War Doctor falls, what will this mean going forward as far as referencing the Doctors by number? (On the show itself, I don't think the Doctors are ever called by number, but fans call Doctors by their number all the time). Will Tennant still be "Ten" to fans going forward, or is he now definitively "Eleven," with Smith booted to "Twelve"? I know the issue has been raised and discussed, but until now it was more theoretical because Hurt could have been something other than 9 (though that was the logical place for him to fit).

In "Journey's End" he regenerated into himself. It's never been made clear what (if anything) that means.

Technically already open as the Doctor has said Time Lords can change sex.

Great little mini-sode. Thanks!

I've still heard it debated and this finally closes the door on the question.
Well as Rob said the can debate is closed but the should debate will be ongoing.

Watching that inspired me to go watch the 1996 Doctor Who movie, which I had never seen before.

Um, wow.

Um, wow.
I hope you mean 1996. There were a couple of Doctor Who movies in the 60's with Peter Cushing that were rather campy.

How does this close it any more than the Doctor talking about a Time Lord that changed sex in "The Doctors Wife?"

I am re watching. Huge Who fan from late Pertwee on.

I've taken the re watch in two chunks. Restarted with "Rose." And am slowly making my way from the very beginning. Netflix has a ton of DVDs of the original series.

We can only hope. Because clearly that did not do the trick.

The new beginning, not the beginning beginning.

It's really almost two different shows. There are a lot more obstacles to loving the old one, although if you're strange enough in the right way then go for it. But the new series is much more accessible to modern tastes.

I hate to be the pedant, but it was actually "The Warrior Doctor".

Tony, if you need pedantic lessons, I can help. I'm really good at that, and I used to teach at the college level.

Oh, and I stand corrected. The credits do, indeed, say "The War Doctor", so my pedanticness is reduced (for this one attempt only!).

So what happens with these YouTube pieces. Is the staff reading forums and going, "hey, people don't know where Hurt fits in the timeline and they're coming up with crazy theories. We should put out a video and clear it up"?

I think it's just extra stuff that wouldn't fit into the main series, fills in some story gaps, and keeps interest high.

They've been doing these for years now. It's pretty canny marketing.
