HIMYM - Bedtime Stories, OAD 11/25/2013

With this story, I was not impressed,
though I'm sure the writers did their best.

This episode was filler I'd say,
Though most of this season has felt that way.

I hope they get back to the premise soon,
The rhyming stories felt like a cartoon.

Like the bus, the season has stalled,
It feels like the show has hit a wall.

They're trying too hard to drag this out,
'Show us more Mother!' I want to shout.

Every week I get a stronger feeling that they are actively punishing us for sticking it out to the end.

First commercial break and my wife and I both thought no way would they do that for the whole episode.

Which is weird because my wife and I really enjoyed this episode. It was bold and different. I enjoyed it because I thought the actors looked like they were having fun with the unique approach.

To each their own...

Precisely this. It felt like punishment.

How many more episodes are left?

[Edit to add: I looked it up. There are 24 episodes total this season. This disaster was number 10.]

This episode falls into a problem of the show's own making. I suspect that had it aired a few seasons ago, it would be looked at fairly charitably. Even if people didn't like it, it would at least get a "nice try!" reaction. Now, because the show has irritated so many people, an episode that tries and fails gets no credit whatsoever, and in fact irritates people even more.

I didn't enjoy it, exactly, but I don't mind that they tried this. Anything that gets away from the Farhampton Inn is OK with me, and the concept was fresh. I didn't like either the Robin or Barney stories -- even in Marshall's imagination, Robin is an awful person -- but some of the rhyming was clever.

Nice try.

I very much agree with that. Even while I was watching it I knew that part of the reason it was annoying is because I expected it to be annoying, if that makes any sense. I couldn't find a way to allow myself to give it a chance.

I loved this episode, if only for the fact that it went back to telling the kinds of stories about the gang that the series is so good at. The rhyming was a fun change of pace. And I loved that the guy across the aisle called Marshall on telling risque, inappropriate stories to his kids and then it flashed quickly to Ted's kids. That's long been one of the criticisms of the show, and it was fun to see them acknowledge it on screen.

The scene with Barney playing the players from all the different boroughs was excellent. Robin eating the cake was kinda dumb, but who cares. I want to see more of the hot professor from Miami.

Yeah, that was funny. I didn't realize that the guy across the aisle was somebody; I'd never heard of him before.

Kudos, too, for throwing "Nantucket" out there in one of the rhymes and letting it hang in the air for a moment while everyone looked at each other.

Of course "episode" can be replaced with "season"

a) The rhyming sounded a lot more like Dr. Seuss than Mother Goose

2) I wanted to write a review of this episode in the same style, but I can't think of anything that rhymes with "self-indulgent".

I assumed that he was "somebody", because his rapping was much better than his acting.

Agreed on a). But they probably didn't want to acknowledge Dr. Seuss and then have to pay royalties or something. Mother Goose is all public domain stuff. Or at least that's the only plausible explanation I can come up with for using Mother Goose in that line rather than Dr. Seuss.

So who was that guy? The IMDb page isn't updated yet. At first glance I thought he looked like Tom Green, but then it was obvious it wasn't him.

For the record, I have no idea who he is. I just googled and eventually found this.

That's why he looked familiar! I've seen him on the Tony Awards.

Spot on. I deleted it after a few minutes.

Was there even a thread on last week's show?

I really wanted to like it. I like when they break out of format and take a risk. But the rhyming was just so annoying in that much quantity. I mean, they did a good job with it; only a handful of the rhymes felt really forced, without the forced-ness being itself the joke. But it just didn't sustain the entire half hour. And the material itself was feeble, particularly Barney's council meeting.

Enjoyed it. Was it trying too hard? Sure. But it's still better than not trying at all (see: almost every other sitcom on TV).

I thought the episode was okay, I suppose, but clearly yet another filler episode.

What got me was that I watched a different show afterward (Mom, I think), and my brain had become accustomed to the cadence of the rhymes, so listening to the regular speech patterns in the second program made them seem stilted.

Considering the 'plot' of the series, nearly every episode since day one is a filler episode.

I don't see how this rhyming episode is any different that when shows do musical episodes. Some of it worked, some didn't, and if you don't like rhymes you wouldn't like it regardless.

I liked Ted's story, mostly enjoyed Robins, and hated Barney's. Pretty par for the course I'd say.

And though I like Alyson Hannigan a lot, I thought she was about as off in this ep as the Buffy musical. I don't think she likes or feels comfortable with music or rhyming.

I had the same Dr. Seuss vibe and I like Dr. Seuss so I kinda liked the episode for what it was. As someone said, if this was in the middle of S4, I might have liked it more, but since this was just obvious filler to stretch the season out, I was disappointed again that the story wasn't moved along. (and really, this should have been half a season of "normal" HIMYM and post winter break could have been the wedding stuff....they could have had half the season be about the Marshall/Lily story line...moving to Rome vs. taking judgeship).

Still don't know why the story needs to "move along."
