X-Files - Best 'stand-alone" episodes?

I never watched this show during its original run on Fox, but with Amazon Prime I now have all the episodes available for streaming. I've been picking and choosing different episodes and prefer the ones without a continuing storyline. I watched one last night with Duane Barry and at the end of that I got the dreaded "To be continued..." So I watched the one after that but that wasn't the end either.

So what are some favorite stand-alones? I liked the one where the guy sucked the fat out of overweight women. Another was about a serial killer who liked to cut hair and fingernails off his victims.

Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose with Peter Boyle was always one of my favorites.

Off the top of my head, here are my favorite stand-alone episodes in different categories:

PURE SUSPENSE/THRILLS

Ice:
Spoiler:
Basically "Who Goes There?" with a somewhat scientific explanation.

Eve:
Spoiler:
Creepy twin girls on opposite sides of the country. Watch it in the dark with surround sound if you have it.

The Pine Bluff Variant:
Spoiler:
Agent Mulder and a bunch of anti-government terrorists with a deadly biological weapon.

FUNNY

War of the Coprophages:
Spoiler:
Cockroaches and a Dr. Bambi to stir Scully's jealousy(?)

Jose Chung's From Outer Space:
Spoiler:
Defies any kind of summary.

Bad Blood:
Spoiler:
A vampire(?) story told twice, once from Mulder's point of view and once from Scully's.

Je Souhaite:
Spoiler:
What if Mulder got three wishes from a genie?

TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Triangle:
Spoiler:
A lot of camera trickery here, with long takes stitched together with seamless transitions so it looks like a continuous 15+ minute shot. . . . Split screens (commonplace now, but not then). "A Wizard of Oz"-like storyline.

I personally liked the alien/government mythology episodes better as a whole than the standalones, but obviously that's a matter of individual taste.

Was "Home" the one with the Johnny Mathis song "Wonderful"?

I always liked ALONE, episode 8.19. It also had some humor.

The ones with Eugene Victor Tooms- "Squeeze" and "Tooms."

And the fluke man in "The Host" creeped me way out.

Too long ago for me to remember, but I always liked the stand alone episodes better than the conspiracy theory ones.

Yeah, especially as the series progressed (or should I say "progressed") and it became increasingly obvious Carter et al. had no clue where they were going with any of the conspiracy stuff...

For a while, it looked like They Had A Plan, and it was going to be cool. Then, not so much.

I always cottoned to the humorous episodes, with my favorite (in order)...
  • Bad Blood
  • War of the Coprophages
  • Jose Chung's From Outer Space
  • Field Trip (yes - I found it hysterical given what it really ended up being about)
  • Je Souhaite
  • Small Potatoes
  • Arcadia
  • The Post-Modern Prometheus
  • The Goldberg Variation
  • How the Ghosts Stole Christmas
  • X-Cops

Other (not necessarily funny) favs include...
  • Triangle
  • Monday
  • Drive (see a pre-Heisenberg Bryan Cranston!!)
  • Squeeze
  • Unusual Suspects

I was never an avid X Files watcher but I would watch several episodes a season. I can't really remember too many of the episodes, except for one.

I have no idea the name of the episode or the season but all I remember is there was some woman with no arms and legs under the bed screaming. It had a very "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" feel to it with deformed people killing people. If memory serves, the woman was the mother and there was inbreeding involved.

The episode left an impression on me to still remember it after so much time.

That is frankly one of the most memorable episodes of any TV show for me ... it was just so well done ... I can barely remember any other remarkable episode of X-Files, but this one was just too good.

"Home" would have been a good one to wait and watch a couple weeks from now near Halloween.

I watched the Pilot episode last night. Scully didn't have red hair.
