Shows that were the greatest shows EVER until you got tired of them

Mad Men and Lost fit this category for me. I watched Lost until the end even though I grew tired of it long before the final season. I'll do the same with Mad Men but the episodes will sit on TiVo for a while.

Heros. I eventually stopped watching, but it was great at first!

Lost. Loved loved loved season 1. Season 2 was good too. By the time there started to be flash forwards (season 4?) I bailed and never watched the rest.

Heroes was like that too.

I think for this category to be different than shows that were great but went downhill, I'm going to stick with shows that were generally good all the way through, but I just got tired of it after awhile.

I think for me it was Law & Order (original version). I really liked the first few seasons, but after awhile, it was the same old same old. The execution was good and some of the stories were interesting....but I got tired of it and stopped watching.

Never got tired of LOST. Or Mad Men.

CSI yes. Got tired after a couple seasons and different spin offs.

The Mentalist. Bones

I get tired of them when it's the same schtick over and over.

Justified. Love it the first few seasons but I find myself not needing to see it every week for the last couple seasons now.

I watched every episode of The Simpsons until about Season 12 or so. I've probably seen less than a dozen episodes since. I simply got bored of it.
In the case of The Office, I watched it religiously until Steve Carrel left the show, and then I basically stopped.

I'd put 24 in that category. It didn't really get worse *cough*Heroes*uncough*. It just seemed the same old.

My wife quit 24 about halfway through. I stuck it out and watched them all.

Lots of formula shows fall into this category for me. All of the CSIs, Bones, and Queer Eye come to mind immediately. They did something and they did it well, every week. But the formula got boring and I moved on.

I like to pretend there were only two seasons of Battlestar Galactic (the R D Moore version)

Not the greatest shows ever, but shows I watched religiously then stopped:

Dexter (watched the first four seasons, missed the next three, and watching the final season just because)
Treme (same thing - started, stopped, gonna watch the final season)
Justified
Boardwalk Empire
New Girl
True Blood
Community
Rescue me
Californication
Glee
Battlestar Galactica
Nurse Jackie
Big Love
House
24
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The Office
30 Rock (though I came back for the end)
Saturday Night Live (Tina Fey was hysterical as Sarah Palin, so I watched for a while...then I stopped again)

24 is a good one. For several seasons, I would look forward for days to watching a new episode. But by the end, I was only watching out of habit. It was still good, but just tired.

Well, 24 for sure, but Buffy is up there too. No one has mentioned the X-Files, or Burn Notice.

Northern Exposure

Absolutely loved it until Rob Morrow left the series and everyone in town was reduced to petty in-fighting. The replacement doctor and his wife were horrible. Still probably tied for #1 on my list with LOST.

good choice. I stuck with it, even through that dumb last season, but it wasn't as good without Rob Morrow.

I dumped Revoltion around episode 3. I always thought it was silly but I had hope.

I lost track of Mad Men at the beginning of season 3 (I think.)

I lost track of The Shield around the beginning of Season 3 and still don't want to see the LT. getting reamed.

I still intended to catch up on those last two on NetFlix/Amazon.

I stopped watching Star Trek DS9 when it became the weekly "Those Awful Cardassians!"

Bones and the Mentalist are on this list for me but the winner has to be The Amazing Race. We watched the first few years and really enjoyed them and then, one season, dunno which, we watched up to the final episode and it sat on the Tivo for about two months when we all three, one day, just said 'delete it'. Never did find out who won.

Loved the original CSI but grew tired of it. Liked NY the best after that. Watched Miami for 4 or 5 seasons and got tired of it as well never thought it was great though.

For me:

Battlestar Galactica (the first few episodes are amongst my favorite episodes of anything). Peak was season 1. Then spent a lot of wandering in the wilderness with occasional greatness, and then descending into a morass in the last season. Barely made it to the end.

The Office. Rough start, but then caught its stride for several seasons. And then gradually flamed out.

ER. Good, strong start. Between the actor exodus and massive shark-jumping, I gave up on it.

Heroes. Strong start, but already unraveling in Season 1. Almost embarassingly bad by end of Season 2.

Simpsons. Still actually reasonably good, but like that big jumbo bag of tortilla chips you bought at Costco, it just keeps getting staler and staler.
