Survivng Jack: First Season Thread **spoilers**

New sitcom, premiered last night (Thur March 27). I was pleasantly surprised. I had read four reviews, two said thumbs down, two said thumbs up. I give it a .

It had the right mix of funny and cute. Chris Meloni, who plays Jack, was a little harsh at first, but by the end he had warmed up (typical pilot behavior). The kids were ok, really liked the mom. I also like Jack's unflagging devotion to his wife, it gives the entire story a nice feeling.

If they can keep this up, it'll be a fun sitcom to watch.

I always forget when these new ones are on. I'll set an SP on it tonight. It looked interesting in the commercials.

To me, it was like a 90's version of The Goldberg's. But not in a good way.

I started watching and gave up half way through. Too bad because I have loved Chris Meloni since 1991, when I saw him in a TV movie called In a Child's Name with Valerie Bertinelli and Michael Ontkean.

For those that don't know, this is from the "**** my Dad Says" guy, and is from his book "I suck at girls", clearly delineating an earlier time in his life.

I like his dad. He's the same cranky opinionated guy he's always been. But the writing does seem better, at least so far, than the earlier series.

The writing on Shat My Dad Says was part of the problem but the lead Jonathan Sadowski was awful in his role.

So far, the casting on Surviving Jack seems to be working better.

I was also pleasantly surprised. We laughed several times. So we'll keep watching. So this years trend is nostalgia family sitcoms. I like. There are some really good ones. The Middle (which takes place in the not too distant past (since it's narrated, it's not in real time), The Goldbergs and now Surviving Jack. I liked that the father didn't yell, but made his point with sarcasm and passive aggressiveness. It game me the impressing the guy was in charge, and the kids knew it and there was no need to holler to get his point across. I too thought it was great that there was real affection for his wife, who was secretly the person in charge when it came down to it. I also really liked how he didn't shy away from making sure the friends knew he was the boss too. That cracked me up.

I'll check it out. I really like comedic Meloni more than dramatic Meloni.

The second episode was MUCH weaker than the first. I hope that was an aberration.

I really didn't like Jack in the first half of the first episode. I really thought he was just massive jerk. But he got a lot better - and I really liked him in the second episode.

For now I'll keep watching.
