The Last Ship - S01E03 "Dead Reckoning" 7/6/14

I enjoyed it, despite it's ridiculousness and obvious plot issues.

Since the recent threads have been mostly about pointing out the plot holes, I'll get this one started.

How the heck did they get those two back on the ship so fast or even at all? They jumped out of their boat near the Russian ship, are we to believe they swam all the way to a pick up location? I don't even recall them wearing life vests or anything.

Yeah I couldn't figure that out either. The captain ordered that a boat go pick them up after they made it through the channel, but wouldn't the Russians notice another boat coming relatively close to the ship to extract the two people? Or wouldn't they have seen the two people jump off the boat and capture them as prisoners?

So at the end they showed that other doctor on the Russian boat, since he was quarantined and breathing on mice does that mean he is contagious, but still alive?

So some old Soviet Era Russian Destroyer is nuclear powered, but our modern destroyers aren't? As a non-Navy person I am sure I am using incorrect terminology, but how come they wouldn't make any large ship nuclear powered?

Looks like all we have left that is Nuclear powered is Carriers and Submarines. Probably over environmental concerns I would guess.

Also I guess this would be the old Russian nuclear powered cruiser.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirov_class_battlecruiser

Apparently there is only one still active and it's going through modernization.

I'm sorry it says there is 1 active and 3 others undergoing modernization.

That was definitely a WTF? moment. But it is TV show so you just go with the flow.

Heck if they were that stealthy the episode could have been 5 mins long. They could have just waited until dark and left

I want to know why we are wasting so much on stealth technology when all we need is some aluminum foil strung between two poles.

The aluminum foil was not to make them stealth, it was to create a decoy radar signature.

The "concept" is that the destroyer has enough stealth technology so that it looks on radar like a roll of tin foil strung between two poles. So by leaving the tinfoil there, it appears as if they have not moved.

Doesn't explain why they wouldn't notice another object moving though.

I didn't know that chickens had nipples. Of course, I hadn't given it much thought before this episode.

They don't of course, just another plot hole we can mark up for the episode.

This is fun!

Yes, that made no sense at all. I can give them technical poetic license to allow the foil to keep the original radar location active but I had a hard time believing that the moving ship would not have ANY radar indicator at all.

But ignoring the above I thought it was a pretty good episode and overall I'm enjoying this show quite a bit!!!

but, but, but....They activated the Prairie/Masker system. LOL (the single dumbest line in the episode, if not the entire series so far)

Overall, liking the show a lot so far though. It's already tons better than that "Last Resort" turd ever was, despite it's flaws.

The biggest flaw in the whole radar thing is that a ship tied to the pier, or the decoy on the pier, would be pretty much indiscernible from it's surroundings (the pier).(reinforced concrete is a pretty good reflector too) At best the ship would be a slight bulge in the otherwise straight edge of the pier. The decoy ATOP the pier, wouldn't show up at all.

So is he the other thing she needs--someone who is naturally immune? So why did he offer to send in guys to help clean up? I guess they could wear gas masks. No wonder they look at him funny. For a minute there I thought he was going to eat the rat.

Funny how the guy blamed the girl for his own weakness. I love you. Now, go away. Forever. That was so high school.

I would be having second thoughts about serving under that Russian admiral if I were one of his officers. Dude didn't even mess up and he still got shot in the head. What happens if you put too much sugar in the admiral's coffee?

If they have someone immune then it's a simple matter to just transfuse his blood into the infected to cure them. At least according to TV bioscience.

I assume the one commie who kept looking at Putin funny is going to become significant...

Yeah, that was my biggest problem with that whole thing, not the incredibly crazy navigating job they apparently had to do to get out.

I don't really know how radar works... I guess I thought that either they were close enough on the edge of the circle that they were just not noticed when they moved out of range or that was why they turned off all their computers and things, so there would be nothing for it to detect.

My favorite exchange of the episode:

"Uh, Captain, it's impossible for us to navigate the destroyer through that channel"

"That's why the Russians won't be expecting it!!!!"

I enjoyed this episode, although I'm not sure why they didn't sink the Russians. The Russians didn't know the position of the US destroyer. They were dealing with a gaping hole in the side of their ship. It would have been the perfect time to lob some missiles into the side of the Russian ship and be done with them. We all know that Russian guy is going to be back by the end of the season. Probably with a carrier or battleship or something else ominous.

That was my take too. Both the immunity and the rat eating.

Radar works by emitting a signal, then measuring the reflected echo of that signal. Since the ship was up against a pier with large structures and such near them, the ship itself would be hard to distinguish from the background clutter on radar. Also, since radar works by measuring the reflection of a signal transmitted, in this case, by the Russians, turning off all the computers and things would have zero effect on the Russian radar.

Shutting down all emissions would prevent the Russians from monitoring them based upon the signals emitted from the US destroyer. However, this is totally unrelated to radar. It's ridiculous to think the Russian crew wouldn't mention to their captain, "Oh hey cap'n, that US ship over there just turned off it's radar and went dark. They might be up to some shenanigans" or that the Russians simply would not have put someone on shore with a radio and binoculars to keep an eye on things.

It was an old Russian ship. They were using cans and string for radar.
