Join or Die With Craig Ferguson

Craig Ferguson is back! He will be on the History Channel starting tonight (Feb 18, 2016) with "Join or Die With Craig Ferguson". (Note: I don't count his foray into game shows. )

There will be two episodes this evening (11 PM and 11:30 PM EST). Here is a review of the show. It sounds interesting. My TiVo OnePass is set. I've missed the guy.

I got the impression that join or die was going to be a game show. Is that not correct? I loved him on his talk show and was disappointed when he decided to stop doing it. Hopefully this has a similar feel and energy to the talk show as I thought he came across as snarky and mean on the game show.

It's not a game show. It's a discussion. That sounds much more interesting to me than actors chatting about their latest movie/TV show.

From the review I linked:
"In each installment, Mr. Ferguson lays out a theme — “History’s Biggest Political Blunders” and “History’s Worst Medical Advice” in the back-to-back inaugural episodes — and then invites three panelists to assess six examples of it. The ultimate goal is to crown, with the help of the studio audience, the best (or is it worst?) example of the phenomenon at hand.

In brief monologues introducing the topics, Mr. Ferguson uses the same irreverence and incongruity that worked so well on his late-night CBS talk show, which ended in December 2014. Then he turns the subject over to the panelists, one of whom has actual expertise; the other two are mostly there for comic relief."

Hadn't followed the link yet. My assumption was based on the promotional stuff I have seen him doing on morning talk shows. It involved him asking questions of the hosts but not really getting to the discussion part. Might have just been due to the format of the hosting show.

I am setting a one pass for it.

What's wrong with his foray into game shows? Celebrity Name Game is lots of fun to watch and he's frequently hilarious on it.

Sounds interesting, I'll check it out.

I know this guy was a talk show host at one point but I never watched that show. I only remember him from The Drew Carey Show way back in the day.

I'm glad you like it but it is not for me. I have nothing against that particular show. I don't enjoy game shows of any kind.

he was on Colbert the other night doing press, and was bordering on being a jerk. His talk show was funny, and the game show was at times. Hopefully he drops the 'jerk' sctick for this new show...

Correction, "the game show is..." He's still doing Celebrity Name Game, it hasn't ended or been canceled.

There's no bigger fan of Craig than I am but I have to give the show a B. His monologue was a nice touch, very similar to his ones on Late Night. I did learn something new. "Gold Star Gay" and "Platinum Gay" [AKA Double Gold Star] were new terms to me and extremely funny. Google is your friend.

Two different shows. The sets for the two shows look similar, which may contribute to the confusion. Also, both shows use a mix of celebrities and "civilians."

Ferguson's show is called Celebrity Name Game and it's syndicated and on every day, which means a couple hundred episodes per season. Each game has two teams of two "civilians," and then two celebrities come on and take turns helping the teams guess clues.

Lynch's show is called Hollywood Game Night and it's on NBC and only on weekly and only certain weeks, so they probably only produce 13-18 episodes per season. On this show, there are two teams, each made up of one "civilian" who is the captain, and three celebrities. The teams then play various games against each other.

Confusing things even further, the bonus round on Hollywood Game Night is called Celebrity Name Game.

Thanks for the synopsis, ScubaCat. I have the first two episodes on deck but haven't gotten to them yet. I didn't really know anything about the show format - I simply recorded them because it was Craig Ferguson.

I enjoyed both episodes, since I enjoy Craig Ferguson. If you're looking for serious historical analysis, this isn't the show. If you want an entertaining show with witty people goofing on historical events, this will do just fine.

I lasted 5 minutes before deleting both shows and cancelling my One Pass.

This show was alright, but the whole premiss is kind of silly. Not sure if I'm going to keep watching or not.

I finally got the chance to watch the two episodes of "Join or Die" that I had recorded. Man it was nice to see Craig again! He was as funny as I remembered. I enjoyed the lively conversation with the guests as well.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I am not a fan of any type of game show. As much as I enjoyed Craig and his guests, the forced format of getting rid of two topics before the commercial break really intruded on that enjoyment. Craig did a very good job of keeping that intrusion to a minimum but it still felt grating to me. I wish Craig could just have a discussion show without this format imposed on it. That would suit me perfectly.

I'll keep watching for now to get my CraigyFerg fix. Maybe it will morph over time.

Craig's been stumping for the show, so he's turned up on other talk shows. I caught him on The Chew (so I had to explain to my husband what The Chew was all about) and Watch What Happens (which, with luck, I will never watch or see ever again).

The main virtue of seeing The Chew was that

Spoiler:
Craig turned up in his off-season look -- casual clothes and a beard. And they found a photo of Craig from his days with the band, so we got to see the young Peter Capaldi as well.

Craig also did a great job on At Midnight this week.

I think I'm caught up on these now, having watched the frenemies last night. I really want to like it but the show is a loser. Not really funny, doubtful that the panel knows what the heck they are talking about (the discussion of why Jefferson and Adams got along/didn't was not impressive, discussion of Edison vs Tesla was basically non-existant) but I'm lazy so will probably keep watching. I do like the host.

Is he the only host who consistently has the camera looking down on him? I like it but it is unusual.

I watched the first two but then canceled my SP. Just not something I could get in to and was running low on space on my TiVo.

I think Craig couldn't resist getting in that sweet game show money that Drew Carey was getting.

Craig was also on Red Dwarf and Doc Martin "rises" from his co-produced Saving Grace.
