The Big Bang Theory [09/22/2014] "The Junior Professor Solution"

There were two episodes on one night but they were unrelated so I made two separate threads.

My favorite quote:
Sheldon: Wow, pouting and running away actually worked. I must say that may not be a lesson you want to reinforce with me.

I'm waiting for a certain member here to pop in and complain how unrealistic the academic environment in this episode is.

I have to say I'm excited for the story arc with Howard getting his phd, and having him start in a class with Sheldon as the professor? Awesome, should be some funny stuff in there.

He dropped the class, so we'll see if it's a recurring story or if it's a one off.

Oh right, they left it like that.

Yeah, maybe it's a one off, but I've long thought they were going to address Howard being an engineer "only" with a masters degree.

I loved the idea of Howard getting his phd. And him and Sheldon trying to best each other was great.

I hope they keep it going.

For anyone that stuck around and watched Scorpion ("based on a true story"), I'm sure the believability of Big Bang quickly left their thoughts.

Yha I'm not even going to touch the need for a software version needed to contact the planes using a AM band transceiver that any average ham op in the next six states could do.

I'd like to see an episode where Sheldon watches Scorpion. Imagine the nerd rage.

The odd thing about last night was that Kevin Sussman was listed as a regular in the first episode and not listed at all in the second one.

Wonder what's up with that?

I can't remember. Did he appear in the second episode?

From a quick search (Hollywood Reporter);
"CBS' The Big Bang Theory has locked up Kevin Sussman for its upcoming sixth season. The actor who plays Stuart the comic book store owner has been upped from recurring to series regular, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. While he becomes the comedy's eighth series regular, he'll likely to continue to recur in the same capacity as the lovelorn sad-sack Stuart, appearing in seven to 13 episodes."
Maybe his name only shows up on episodes he is actually in.

Note: I've been spelling his name wrong. It is "Stuart".

This is the seventh season and that article says Season 6. What is it dated?

Stuart did not appear in this episode.

Historically though, once an actor is promoted to series regular, their name appears in the credits for in every episode for at least the entire season as shows generally don't like redoing the opening title sequence mid season, whether they appear or not.

(Friends did this when Courteney Cox insisted she wanted to billed as "Courteney Cox Arquette" in the midst of production. Grumbling was heard from the producers though.)

With Opening Title Sequences mostly going away for network shows, this may be less of an issue now.

TBBT overlays it's title sequence over the cold open or teaser so it's probably a simple add/delete in post processing.

(Although I do miss the well done Opening Title sequence.)

I remember reading about him being upped from recurring to series regular awhile back so it may have happened last year. But then they seemed to put him back as recurring so I have no idea what his actual status is.

I'm glad to see a change in some of the characters lives with Sheldon teaching and changing from string theory, Penny with a haircut , ( I don't remember them making a explanation/deal about it. Did I miss something? ) and now a new job. ( being a salesperson is really acting, as you have to convince the buyer that you really believe your product is wonderful and you care about their family. )

I like Stuart becoming a regular member and his new job.

Nope. Just that it happened, and they hung a lantern on it all throughout the previous episode (The Locomotion Interruption).

Sorry! I usually check for dates and I didn't think to look this time since the article addressed the question so exactly. I looked again and the article was actually from 2012 so I guess he has been a series regular (who appears irregularly ) for longer than I thought.

Well, there is the right way to spell it and the wrong way - so that makes two ways at least.

Well, for one, the class would have been canceled with only one student enrolled.

I'm still not sure if he didn't know the answer to that question, or whether he was just distracted by the spitball.

I want to say that they may have credited him as a regular in a Season 6 episode or two but then put him back as recurring when they couldn't figure out what to do with the character.

Maybe they actually have a concrete story idea for his character now.

You mean the part where they are permitting a class with one student?? I recall a guy talking his sister to take a class when it looked as if we were one student shy of having a class!

It's not unheard of to have graduate seminars with very small attendance. In this case where they are bending over backwards to accommodate Sheldon it makes more sense than your average TV shenanigan. Don't forget who the department head wants to sleep with, after all!

Although my son is in a class with only two students at NYU right now--it's senior level, but I was still surprised they let it go. Then again, given the price of tuition...
