There are definitely times when I feel like I can sense the acting. The best actors never seem like they're acting.

I agree. I'm in the middle of House of Cards right now, and Spacey has blown me away with his performance so far. If you go back to the beginning of this thread, you will see that I thought Spacey was a lock for the Emmy. I was truly shocked that he didn't win, and I can only assume that Daniels won because Cranston and Spacey split the vote.

That is the exact reason that I think Nic Cage is the worst actor in Hollywood. For me, he's never the character he's portraying. He's always Nic Cage acting the part of the character he's playing.

I guess he's such a good actor he made you think he was Jeff Bridges.

See I've seen Kevin Spacey play that exact same character before. While it may not be true, that character IS Spacey to me, I never once felt I was watching someone other than him.

I think the guy is extremely versatile. I can name plenty of other movies where his role was way different than his character in HoC such as in Glengarry Glen Ross, The Usual Suspects, Beyond the Sea, Se7en, etc ...

I don't understand "splitting the vote" logic. If there are two overwhelming favorites (Spacey, Cranston) that each get 30%, Daniels gets 20%, and the other nominees split the remaining 20% how does Daniels win? (The numbers aren't important here; I'd expect two "obvious" contenders to finish 1-2 in the voting.) How does a "third-best" actor win an award?

I don't think there were just two actors that people were splitting the vote between. You could make a case for any of the six (John Hamm, Damien Lewis, Bryan Cranston, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Daniels, Hugh Bonneville). So if people are split on whether it should be Spacey or Cranston or Hamm or Lewis or Daniels, and each of them get somewhere between 15-18%, then it wouldn't take a very big push to get any one of them over the top.

He's great, I really like him, but he's always Kevin Spacey. That is not the case with Bryan Cranston.

I thought it was very entertaining. Then again, I watched it faster than realtime and skipped the commercials of course. (I *semi* seriously thought about watching it at 2x on my iPad with VLC.. but didn't do that. Though I've now started doing that with some things like the Voice episodes. Switch back to 1x for the actual singing if I like it, but go back to 2x for everything else.)

I can't remember, though I am willing to be corrected, any actor who transformed himself as well as Cranston.
And don't forget he was Watley on Seinfeld, the dentist.

I love these threads. Basically, if your favorite didn't win he wuz robbed, or the vote was split, etc.

That's why we all have opinions, and that's why there's a People Choice Award show where you can vote for your favorite. Not that I necessarily agree that these Emmy voters are any more qualified than you or me, but maybe they just saw something we didn't. Who knows? I thought Jeff Daniels-Bridges (I'm calling him that for now on ) was great (the first season as someone pointed out). What I saw of Breaking Bad, Cranston was great. Hamm is always great, and I thought he was especially good this last season, even though the season wasn't as good as the others. Spacey is always a great actor, but I haven't watch HoC yet. Really, between them, it's splitting hairs.

On the women's side, the best actress of the season wasn't nominated, so I'm not even gonna comment

Voting for Emmys isn't "everybody on the panel votes for one person, and whoever gets the most wins." Each branch (e.g. acting) can choose between a points-based system and preferences (i.e. pretty much the same as how the Oscars choose Best Picture; the nominees are ranked, and if nobody has a majority, then whoever has the fewest votes is eliminated and that nominee's votes are given to the highest-ranked choices among the remaining nominees).

A "third-best" nominee can win if nominees A and B are the "two best", but A's supporters rank B at the bottom and B's supporters rank A at the bottom.

I normally do not watch award shows but the exclusion of Jack Klugman and Larry Hagman having their own segments made the decision easier this year.

As for best actor, I have not seen all the shows so I personally can't compare them all but from the few that I have seen I have no problems with Jeff Daniels winning. The role is certainly less flashy than the others so I can see why others think it is a bad choice but I don't believe it was.

Do I think Klugman was more deserving than a druggie who ended up effectively offing himself?

Yes.. But after having actually WATCHED the tributes, they were not these really in depth memorials to each specific person.

I mean, it seems like people expected them to be the equivalent of lifetime achievement award intro reels, but it wasn't. For each person, they basically said a paragraph or so about the person.. and the one about the Glee guy was something about people getting to know him or him through his character.. Not some gushing tribute to a druggie.
