Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 10/1/2013 (S01E02) "0-8-4"

Interesting episode.

The team is coming together with skills meshing reasonably well.
Another nod to the earlier movies in the Marvel 'verse.
A bit of a reveal.
A nice cameo/guest appearance.

Shield 616. Is that a reference to the Marvel Universe number?

There was a bit of an echo to a previous Whedon work in tonight's episode: the weapon that Ward uses, a staff that he plants in the ground that launches an object in the air that sends out a pulse. It was very similar to the same sort of weapon that Simon Tam used while rescuing River from the Alliance research facility, as depicted in the movie Serenity.

I thought this ep was pretty bad, bordering on terrible. Stereotypical roles, bad dialog, implausible situations...it was like watching an episode of the A-Team. How much air was in that plane anyway?

I immediately picked up on that.

I think I liked this episode better than the first.

And an inflatable raft plugging the hole and making it all normal again?

That would explain why I asked myself "Looks familiar, where have I seen that before?"

Hah, I mentioned "A-Team" to my wife.

For all of its corniness, I love it, for exactly that reason. Fun.

I enjoyed and will keep watching. The wonder twins were a bit better this week and yes, they had to have a mutual enemy so the team could come together, but really, the rubber raft thing saving the day was a bit silly.

As much as I enjoyed the episode I did find that ridiculous. But after I rolled my eyes I just went with it.

Except for the "Hollywood science" that a hole in a plane causing everyone to get sucked out, I enjoyed the episode.

I was wondering how long it would take for a cameo appearance. I didn't think it would be the 2nd episode though.

Yeah, pretty much sums up my feelings most of the episode. It's hard to believe they actually chose to write the episode as they did. I'd have expected there to actually be some grand desire to write intelligently thought-out scripts for this show, considering all the folks involved and the high expectations the network apparently has for it. Apparently not.

Of course many good shows have the occasional turd to burn off. We'll see.

My hope is that their desire/need to accomplish certain big-picture show-building stuff overwhelmed their need to tell a good story, and they just got lost in the weeds. And that now that they've set up what they needed to do this week, next week they can tell a REALLY GOOD STORY.

That's my hope, and I'm sticking to it!

Definitely weaker than the pilot. It felt like they weren't satisfied with just one pilot and decided to make another setting-things-up episode. I also felt that the plane stuff was derivative of other work and the marvel universe itself. It wasn't quite cheeky enough to be self-aware.

Some of the dialogue was still pretty good, though. And I still enjoy it a lot more than any recent superhero show.

In a way, it was almost part 2 of the pilot. Part 1 introduced the characters and the world, part 2 introduced the *team*.

I enjoyed it. In a universe with people that have powers, a big raft in a giant hole was not a huge deal for me. Maybe it was made of special material. Did any of you test it? hmm? hmm? I thought not!

Tho I did think I would not be standing near it .. I would run to the other side of the plane hoping it held.

Since no one would get sucked out of the plane in the first place, it makes sense that the raft would hold.

Seriously??? Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury at the end of the show?

Too bad they couldn't work some way to get some snakes on the plane.

I liked the episode well enough.

As soon as the foreign military dudes got on the plane, I figured they would end up being bad and taking over the plane. Yep. It seems like all shows do the exact same things always.

Note

So, after watching 2 episodes, I am not terribly impressed.. There is some humor in the dialogue, but the overall writing and action seems to be a bit too cheesy..
And from watching his appearances in the movies, I didn't realize how bad an actor Clark Gregg is. I don't think he is meant to be a lead. And the acting from some of the others isn't much better.
I don't know.. maybe it's me..
Oh, and the inflatable raft thing? Are you kidding me?
But I'll keep watching, because it's Joss Whedon.. And Firefly was the best show ever.
I loved the cameo at the end though!

I was waiting for there to be a comment about the monkey fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday plane but alas, I was not rewarded.

The raft made perfect sense! By then all that extra air in the cabin (which must have been kept at 10000000 PSI) had leaked out, so there was no pressure differential.

For the folks that weren't as happy with this episode, at least we can celebrate that this is on ABC rather than FOX. FOX would have made them run this one as the pilot

I don't know how many more episodes of this I can stomach. It wants to be Firefly but there's no Fillion, Baldwin, Glass, etc. None of these AoS actors (except for 'Skye') seems to be able to actually act.
