Color Bars

Does anyone have either a file of standard HDTV color bars or know of a place where they can be found? One of the HD cable networks used to broadcast them once a week or so as a test/setup program, but I haven't seen it in ages. I'm willing to download a file and transfer to my TiVo as I have desktop plus

There are plenty of examples on YouTube, and would be easily accessible with the YouTube app on your TiVo.

Not sure how accurate the ones on YouTube are. There are DVDs and BluRays for calibration that have test patterns. In the past I rented one from Netflix, ripped it to a PC and then transferred it to my TiVo so I could calibrate the TiVo input. Or you could just take the easy route and hook a BD player to the TiVo input temporarily, do the calibration, then switch back. It should be close enough.

Check the AVS Forum. I believe that's where I downloaded some test pattern files/videos when I got my new TV.

There are Video calibration discs available that contain the pattern. Here are two:

Digital Video Essentials
Avia Guide to Home Theatre

Check you local library. Mine carries both discs. You can avoid purchase.

I guess I'll just make them at work. Dan, what do you think is the highest quality codec that TiVo Desktop Plus will allow?

HDNET (AXS) runs color bars in glorious HD quite often overnight, with a program listing of 'HD Color Bar Test' or something like that.

I've got 1 hour of it saved on my TIVO.

Unfortunately no HDNet or AXS on Comcast.

TiVo Desktop will only allow MPEG-2 without recoding. So if you want the highest quality then look for a .mpg file.

Alternatively pyTiVo will allow you to pull H.264 files without recoding. It's a bit of a PITA to install, but once it's working it's vastly superior to TiVo Desktop. (Hint: Follow instructions to install as a service)

You mean in your franchise? We have AXSTV/HDNet here on Comcast in our small Podunk town of 24,000!
