The Newsroom Renewed

The Newsroom is up for one final season.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/liv...d-third-669973

There's also an interesting twist.

Quote:
Joining Sorkin and executive producers Alan Poul and Scott Rudin for Newsroom’s third season is Paul Lieberstein. The former showrunner of (and actor on) The Office, a Sorkin favorite, will come aboard as an executive producer on the HBO series.
Sad it's the final season, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.

I figured The Newsroom had a bit of an expiration date from the start:

1. It tries to base things on real-world events.
2. Time passes faster in the show than realtime.

So there was a limited amount of time before the show would catch up with realtime.

Which makes you wonder what Sorkin was thinking when he wrote the pilot. Did he intend for the show to just stay perpetually two years behind real time so he could do the "with hindsight I'm smarter than every journalist in the world" schtick over and over? Was he just enamored with 2010 and wanted to dissect that year's news, and then didn't really care what happened after that? Did he never intend for the show to last very long?

if you factor in hbo's history of waiting much longer than a year between a serie's seasons, i gave it more than 3 and out...maybe they will renegotiate.

Although that is a fair criticism of the show, I found it refreshing.

Better than making up fake politicians, and fake news, imho.

Wait, what?

I think their series almost always come back on a regular annual basis...

Normally this show has a summer run, but according to the article in the OP, it says fall. Are they pushing back Boardwalk Empire which has run in September in the past? It also mentions that B.E. will be ending after this season as well.

Ah...didn't read until the end...I knew about True Blood but had no idea Boardwalk was also doing only one more season.

Good to hear that The Newsroom is returning, but sad to hear that it's the last season. I love Sorkin's snappy dialog and the fast talking between characters. It really keeps the pace of the show moving forward and never makes it boring. This seems to be his signature style based on how he did The West Wing and Studio 60.

Boardwalk Empire had pretty much run its course. They killed off a lot of the main characters in the last episode, which leaves me wondering who's left in the cast except Nucky? I guess we'll get to see him retire to Florida with Patricia Arquette in the final season.

Five years seems to be the max for most premium cable shows. If they try to stretch it beyond that the stories start getting repetitive and too much like regular network TV. They need to attract a huge audience in order to recoup their expenses since they're mostly supported by subscribers and not advertising. If people start getting bored with the show they lose too many viewers so they need to keep things fresh with new shows.

Spoiled for those who didn't see last season:

Spoiler:
Actually, most of the key characters are still there. Nucky, his brother, Capone, the former FBI agent, I think Rothstein. They killed off a lot of the secondary characters, which they've done every season so far. And there's a lot to cover, which I suppose they will be this season. I imagine that Chicago will play a bigger role as Nucky's brother is out there and it's about the timeframe for Capone to take over. I would have liked to see this run until the end of Prohibition to see how Nucky, et al deal with that.

Curb Your Enthusiam as well. That show has been on 14 years and only 8 or 9 seasons.

CYE was weird in that they kind of gave Larry David an open invitation to do seasons (or it felt that way). So really, Larry only did a season when he felt like it. I bet if LD decided to do another season, HBO would jump on it. It might be hard to do now with so much of the cast doing other things.

As far as I'm aware, CYE is still on the air and HBO is just waiting for LD to say when he's ready to start working on the next season. And that's the way it's been between most of the recent seasons. LD doesn't know if he'll want to make another, and when he's ready, HBO backs up the money truck.

That'll happen when the talent has enough money to write a check to buy the network.

Yep, I'm sure it hasn't been "cancelled", "not renewed" or whatever the term du jour is. I just think it will be hard for him to do it now. It seems like most of the key members of the cast are doing other things. Jeff Garlin is in the Goldbergs, Cheryl Hines is doing Suburgatory, JB Smoove is in a bunch of things, etc. Doesn't mean they can't do the series, but it would have to be timed right.

They started in April 2010 (BP oil spill) and are now in November 2012 (Presidential election) at the end of season 2. Seems like they could go on as long as they like as long as they keep each season to a year. Like, if this season was filmed in early 2014, aired in fall of 2014, and covered November 2012 to November 2013, then a hypothetical next season, airing in fall 2015, could cover November 2013 to November 2014. And so on.
