Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "The Body" - 2/27/01 *Spoilers*

Sorry to make a post about a show from eight years ago, but I finally started watching Buffy for the first time on DVD.

I didn't want to resurrect the other Buffy threads for fear of seeing spoilers (I already kinda had this episode spoiled for me, I knew someone died in it and I put two and two together when Joyce got sick.)

This was probably the best hour of television I ever watched.

It's a shame I thought Buffy was a stupid teen show (especially since I was a teen when it was on.) I thought my tear ducts had dried up from years of disuse, this episode disproved that theory.

Everything about it was brilliant, the lack of sound, the acting from every character, just amazing.

Just had to bring that up.

Yea, The Body is an amazing episode. Just about perfect, despite having Dawn in it!

If there are any eight-year-old episodes worth making a thread for, "The Body" has to be at the top of the list.

Agreed, but didn't mention it because I didn't want to get into detail and spoil the OP.

Dawn and Riley are the bane of my Buffy experience.

Once More With Feeling is now I got my friend into watching Buffy. She now owns the entire run of Buffy and Angel on DVD. I also own the soundtrack to that episode.

That's the one that hooked me.

I'm sad that there aren't more seasons on Hulu.
I don't think FX is running Buffy anymore.

"The Body" was the first episode of Buffy I ever saw, and I was instantly hooked.

Nope, I did a search on my TiVo - no one is showing it, surprisingly. I would've thought someone would've picked it up by this point, like one of the "classic TV" cable or broadcast TV networks, perhaps.

Aw, they weren't that bad. Dawn came into her own in the later seasons. Riley was definitely different than Buffy's other boyfriends, which I liked.

Anya's monologue about death being stupid and mortal and how she doesn't understand what she's supposed to do or feel is one of the few things in this world that almost make me cry.

I loved Anya's monologue and pretty much everyone else's also. I've never gotten the hate for Dawn. She's not my favorite, but I never disliked her. On the other hand, I have a Buffy T-shirt that has all of them on it including Riley, and I kind of wish he wasn't there.

Ya I started watching the first three seasons on Hulu, then subbed in from the library (my library shows the later seasons in searches, but when you go to the page it shows 0 copies in the system) Now I'm using Blockbuster Online to finish it out, kinda annoying though cause my local blockbuster doesn't have it in the actual store. I checked when I first started watching to see if anything on tivo plays them, but nothing. They do play Angel though.

I love Anya, she's my favorite character and her monologue was heartbreaking.

I like the actress that plays Dawn, just right now she feels like a liability (I know at least where I am in the show that's sorta the point) than anything else. If she doesn't turn into a Kim Bauer I'm ok with her, but right now I'm just not liking her because she feels more like a plot device than a person.

Riley is just boring as all hell.

Eight years later, just thinking about that episode literally brings tears to my eyes. It was brilliantly done.

I'm fairly certain this episode won an Emmy for writing the year it came out. Very deservedly, if my memory is correct.

It's too bad that the cast of this show isn't working anywhere anymore (even SMG isn't really doing much) - aside from Giles (I'm sure he's doing something across the pond) and Spike (Marsters is in a recently released live action movie based on an Anime TV series).

Nope, not even nominated. Despite deserving it more than any other show on TV, Buffy never won an Emmy other than for Best Makeup and Best Music Composition. The only writing nomination it ever received was for Hush.

I'm led to believe that Willow has some kind of sitcom or something these days....

And Darla has Dexter and Angel has Bones, Faith has Dollhouse, and Xander and Dawn both have regular recurring roles. Etc. (To continue the trend of using character names. Which I don't like but it's the trend here)

Nicolas Brendon (see I'm different!) is putting the boots to Garcia (well not that different) on Criminal Minds.

I honestly don't understand why people hate Riley and Dawn so much. Then again, I did not like Angel at all. Riley was a well-drawn character in a plot line that was a mite over the top (even for Buffy) and a nice guy. Dawn was very much the typical teen-age girl at first, but I think her story got a bit lost further on as other story arcs and characters became more prominent.

(And I'm having a very hard time writing this without giving other things away, so further discussion is real welcome!)

Ok, I was wrong. The witch has a little TV sitcom. I did completely forget about Darla and Angel though neither of them really came into their own on Buffy. That was Angel.

As for Dawn and Xander, I've honestly not seen them working at all in anything worth seeing since the end of Buffy.

As for Anya, she seems to have retired entirely.

And Faith wasn't really part of Buffy. She was a season little bad guy (as opposed to the season big bad).

ok, it's true, I completely stepped on myself with my original comment.

I am sure getting old, all I remember dying that early on the show was the mom of Buffy, is that this Joyce? I don't recall the name. As for bad characters, Oz and Riley, sure did not need....

I never thought of that mom death show as extra special, BUT now the one where Buffy becomes a rat and wakes up naked in a basement with a flashlight on her, now THAT was the greatest moment of the series!!!! I have dozens of still pictures from that.....and the one where she was in bed with Spike was a good number 2 classic.

She was in California, why in hell were they never on a BEACH? (Especially like Blacks Beach) fighting vampires and having to blend in with the crowd? I'd have gotten those ratings up!!

One of the finest hours of TV ever, but I have to gear myself up whenever I think about watching it again, because it's just too painful. There's an excellent commentary track from Joss on the DVD - well worth a listen even if you don't normally care for those.

Well there was a swim team victory beach party scene in season 2's "Go Fish".

But it was a night, and chilly, and everyone was bundled up.
