TVLand Sucks!!!

I end up with quite a few suggestions recorded on TVLand. And I see the same pattern almost every time. But today was the most egregious. It recorded a 30 minute sitcom. The recording was 44 minutes long. It started on time. And still the damn thing got cut off. An extra 14 minutes of commercials wasn't enough for them, they still needed more time.

TV Land was good in the late 80s. It has pretty much sucked since then. MeTV is where it's at now.

I don't watch TVLand for old sitcoms, although I know a bunch of you do. I like their home-grown sitcoms, you know, the ones for geezers.

Hey, if that means they're showing the ENTIRE episode in ~46 (or whatever) minutes, great. Evidence of that would be good. I'd love to see 'reruns' of old shows (esp ones I've never seen before), but absolutely the ENTIRE show.

Well it can't be the whole show since it's still cutting off the ends!!!!!!

It's still ridiculous that they can have a 44 minute time slot for a show that was originally 30 minutes, with commercials. Some times when I'm forwarding through the commercials it takes so long that I forget what I'm watching.

Unfortunately it's pretty tough to tell if they are still cutting part of the middle of the shows. Most of them are so old that I have no way of remembering what might be missing.

Oh yes- the commercial breaks are ridiculous- I have seen times when there are 4 minutes of show, 7 minutes of commercials, repeat.....

And they are definitely cutting shows- I know the King of Queens episodes so well that I notice every time there is a missing scene...

I think all the Nick channels that show old sitcoms do the same thing. I used to flip on Friends on Nick at Night, and they show the opening couple of minutes, then SEVEN MINUTES of commercials. It's any wonder they get ratings at all. Anyone in their right mind would just change channels to see what else is on. That's what I do. I've pretty much given up at this point.

So sick of their oddball start/end time and the constant commercials. It's pretty much unbearable to watch their channel anymore.

Are these syndicated reruns THAT expensive that they need THAT many extra commercials to pay for it?

That is crazy. I've heard about channels cutting from the show to get in an extra commercial. To push a 30 minute show to 44 minutes to get in that many more commercials is nuts. Must of these shows actually have like 22 minutes of content. So, half of the 44 minutes is commercials.

Yep, that's about right. I guess they get enough ratings to justify it, or they just don't care.

As weird as this might sound, I wish MeTV was in HD, only because the SD picture from my local MeTV channel via DirecTV is horrible. Still I like a lot of the old stuff, Get Smart, Welcome Back Kotter, M*A*S*H are three shows I've watched recently.

I don't notice it as much on TBS. Seems when I watch TBBT on TBS, it begins and ends on time.

I was referring to more commercial than show and butchering the show to make room for them.

I watch OTA and record on my S3.

And my earlier comment was mistaken. It was Nick at Night that I enjoyed in the 80s. I don't think I've watched much of TV Land.

I don't remember whether it was TVLand or METV, but I know I was watching an old show, something didn't seem right, and after thinking I realized they'd chopped a fairly significant piece out of the show.

Wow, Midas. That really IS sucky!

I only watch that channel for some of their original programming shows but even sometimes the Tivo guide is a hot mess AND it's one of the channels that often has shows that are reruns somehow coded as new so almost every year I end up removing my SPs and dairying it to bring them back when new seasons start.

So, they are sucky in a few ways but I still watch those few things.

I watch a fair amount of TBS and I don't have problems with them, either.

SpikeTV does the same thing adding commercials. 30 minute episodes of Cops run 34-35 minutes.

Yeah, I've ranted about this many times.. I'm amazed so many of you notice it and _still_ watch the (butchered) shows.

The show that bugged me was a Gilligan Island ep, and that was the last one I watched. It bugged me enough to make me quit watching.

It's been done in syndication since there HAS been syndication. But TVLand, Nick at Night have taken it to a new level. They've actually ADDED time to their schedule for these shows so that they can show more commercials.

The thing is, after awhile, you get used to seeing them that way. For example. I've been watching M*A*S*H in syndication for years. I've seen the full uncut versions of the shows maybe twice, when CBS originally ran them. But for 20-30 years, I watched the cut down for syndication version, and it never bothered me. It was only after getting the DVDs for the series that I noticed there was stuff cut out.

How good could it have really been? It didn't even exist until the mid 90's.

It's been done by TBS for decades I remember watching Beverley Hillbillies where they would cut 10 minutes of a scene, the entire set up for punchline then cut to punchline and everyone laughing.

Older sitcoms, if unedited, will usually have between 24 and 26 minutes of programming per half hour. If they weren't editing the show, pushing it out to 44 minutes is a good deal, as long as I wasn't watching it live.

If they do edit it, then it's just wrong.
