American Horror Story: Freak Show E01 - OAD 10/8

Nobody's watching? I found this to be mesmerizing. I really enjoyed the pilot episode of this new AHS.

I HATE creepy clowns and although it's on my TiVo, I've been putting off watching. I am assuming there are creepy clowns, right?

There is the one (very) creepy clown, but the show was really good and he wasn't there all the time. I don't know if that helps, but if you can manage the creepy clown thing (I totally get it!), it's worth watching.

Pretty much any clown creeps me out but I don't have it too bad, so I can watch. I remember that one in that Stephen King movie (with the little kids and the drain, etc). That was some seriously creepy clown. This one is of that caliber, if not more so.

well the consensus amongst my group of friends was this premiere episode really sucked and the evil clown sucked even more.

ryan murphy being weird for the sake of being weird is just being weird.

Not being in your group of friends, I'm free to say I'm intrigued.

Not entirely sold yet, but intrigued. If it comes together like the witches did, yay. If it doesn't like the mental institution, boo.

Good enough to keep watching for now.

Got a kick out of Jessica Lange singing "Life on Mars"

The sound mix was atrocious.
Not only did it make it sound as if Jessica Lange nearly whispering the entire show, we could not understand one word Ma Petite even said.

It was weird, but then I expected weird.
I thought the Bowie piece was absolutely stellar right down to makeup and wardrobe

But I was thoroughly confused by the two different images of Elsa getting ready for her performance, one the eyeshadowed Bowie, the other in a black semi Pierrot look that disappeared.
The weird kid Dandy with Frances Conroy Mom was strange- I guess they bought all the tickets ("every seat is mine!")

Lobster boy's talent seemed a little odd, even for a Tupperware party

And finally, Kathy Bates' accent drove me bonkers. I read that it was supposed to be old school Baltimore? Weird.

I was confused about what happened to candystriper and how Elsa got her uniform- was she drugged and raped or was the contortion orgy consensual?

That was John Carroll Lynch as Twisty the clown!!
How on earth do you see that shambling towards you and just stand there?
And take the effing flowers?????

Most seasons of AHS start strong then go off the rails but it seems this one is starting off already skewed. Yay freaky weirdness and all but if I have to watch with closed captions on it will take away a lot of my enjoyment.

Well that just goes to show you because I think the mental institution was the most successful season of AHS and the witches? Not so much.

I couldn't understand them either and wound up having to turn on the CC.

I find that, for a lot of shows, I have to use my wireless headphones. This was one of them. I miss an awful lot if I don't, but with the headphones I hear everything very well even though my tinnitus.

So many shows seem to have too much noise going on. There will be music (or some version of music), weird piercing slamming sounds, AND the dialogue. With my ear-ringing I just cannot listen to that many things at one time. I was watching a movie yesterday and aside from the stupid background music there was some pretty loud repetitive banging sound in there. Without the headphones I would not have heard a thing anybody said.

I had to look up John Carroll Lynch, as I was not familiar with the name. But I recognized him right away at that point. What a fun role, I'd think, what with mostly just walking around, running, and looking weird totally covered in make up and prosthetics.

One strange (in another way entirely) thing I found was at the end of the episode, in that very last scene with Jessica Lange. That didn't look very well done.

My niece tried to get me interested in the witches season but I had already missed too much to understand what was going on. I'm watching this new season from the start and the first episode totally hooked me. No problem with the sound at all. I think I'll have to find a good weekly synopsis to really understand all that is going on though.

Good, but not a great beginning for me. Unlike previous stories this one did not have a supernatural element. No witches, ghosts, or aliens. But we'll see how the story pans out.

So far it's not catching my interest, but still more interesting than the entire 2nd season which I found dull and lifeless.

My husband and I finally watched the first episode the other day. It is hard at our house, with a 5 year old potentially popping in and getting traumatized by whatever is on the screen. After the first episode we were both kind of "meh" about the whole thing.

I did get a chance to watch the second episode while I was home sick on Monday, and without spoiling anything, it did kind of hook me a bit more.

This, times 100,000,000. Just seems affected. And like bad acting.

Bates's accent was identical to the one she used in "Dolores Claiborne" but it bothered me less in that movie.

I disagree that it was identical- Dolores Claiborne was a very clear (and good) Maine accent.
Whatever monstrosity this is, IMO it isn't that.

Before I mentioned that this was the first Horror Story without anything supernatural. I stand corrected.

I read somewhere (maybe here, I don't recall) that it is supposed to be an older Baltimore accent. Here's an article that talks about it:

Quote:
In addition to the beard she wears to bring Ethel Darling to life, Bates has applied another element to her Freak Show character: a very thick Baltimore accent. “Ryan has a good friend from Baltimore and I’m all about that stuff. So I asked if I could have a Baltimore accent,” Bates said. “And he said, ‘Yes, but not too much.’”

While Murphy may have wanted something subtler, Bates felt “you either sound like you’re from Baltimore or you don’t,” so she came up with the intense accent fans have noticed since the Freak Show premiered earlier this month.

To hone her chosen dialect Bates — who does not work with a coach — relied heavily on two sources: listening to interviews with Barbara Ann Mikulski, a United States senator from Maryland, and a “Baltimorese” website. “It has all the words and a link to ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in Baltimorese,” Bates said of the online lexicon and the song she performs almost every morning to get into character. “When I found it, I was like, ‘Hoooly moooly! That’s it!’”

Wife and I made in a few minutes into this and she said it was too gory.

Is the rest of the episode (and subsequent) episodes about the same? Not wanting to spoil anything for anyone else, just a general question. Not sure what's so different about this one, we've watched all other seasons.

I'll try and find time to watch this alone I guess.

I'm not finding it particularly gory. It's definitely my least favorite season so far. It just seems slow.

As posted above, I HATED the first episode (particularly the clown). However, I think this is becoming one of my favorite seasons (I still have to give it up to Asylum and crazy nuns).

I think the narrative this season has been the clearest and that's why I am steadily enjoying it. I could do without Michael Chiklis but other than that.

Well, we sorta finished watching the first episode. It was late after trick or treating and visiting w/friends. I say sorta because we were both pretty tired and dozed off the last few minutes or so. I may have to rewatch that in the future.

So far, it OK, not great but I know we're just getting into it.
