Whoever wrote this list must be under 30. And there parents told them about some older shows.. What about NCIS, The Flintstones ,,lol Bonanza , CSI, Castle, Bones, Knots Landing, Stargate SG1, Have Gun Will Travel, Mission Impossible, Man From U.N.C.L.E., Charlie's Angels, Matlock. just to name a few that should be up there.

South Park should be about 80 positions higher.

The Wire placed #1 on three of the lists: 100 Greatest TV Shows, 10 Greatest Dramas, 10 Greatest Cult Classics.

No arguments from me.

I have never watched a single episode of any of those shows. I know people like them but they never really enter my mind as "best" of anything.

Nice to see this criminally under-appreciated show get some love.

Another criminally under-appreciated show in a similar vein: Episodes (Showtime).

As usual, one or a few people's opinions of what is the best. Nice fodder for argument always, but obviously we all have different opinions. Of the top 10, four I either had no desire to watch or didn't like all that much, one I am too young to have seen (and I'm 53) and the others are maybe top 10. I'd say Sopranos, All In the Family and Seinfeld, of the shows I watch are worthy. MTM, I always felt was overrated, and while I like Mad Men, It wouldn't be in my top 10. Definitely top 50 though. Seriously, Buffy top 10? (*ducks*)

Episodes is underrated. I rarely ever see anything written about it.

Yeah, this a very subjective and generational list... as a latch-key kid born in '73, a bunch of my shows are missing. Some of them would be:

The Dick Van Dyke Show
Happy Days
Magnum PI
Three's Company
6 Million Dollar Man
I Dream of Jeannie
MacGyver
Gilligan's Island
Fantasy Island
The A-Team
Dukes of Hazard
Batman
Miami Vice
The Partridge Family
Hawaii 5-O ('70s version)
CHiPs
Diff'rent Strokes
The Facts of Life
Hogans Heroes
The Greatest American Hero
Married With Children
WKRP in Cinncinati

"Best" is such a bad term. "Best" based on what criteria? For me Best = My favorites. Why would I ever put The Wire #1 if I watched it and didn't like it? But obviously the author loved that show.

Any type of list like that, by its nature is subjective.

Was it done by a bunch of TV critics?

And, Oh, BTW Entertainment Weekly's recent issue has ranked the 100 Greatest TV series also:

The absence of The Dick Van Dyke show is instant proof that these subjective lists are worthless.

I think it's certainly possible for a single individual to make a list of his 100 "favorite" shows and not include the Dick Van Dyke Show. But a "best" list would have to include it, whether it was a personal favorite or not, because of its excellent writing, direction, performances and production values.

Clearly there is some kind of error. Typo or whatever.

Which is exactly my point. I know I usually dis professional critics because, heck, they have an opinion of what's good, just like me, and I'm not sure they are any better qualified at judging TV shows than you or I am....but....poll 100 TV critics and I'd be surprised if 5 put Buffy in their top 10. But poll 100 people here, and you'd probably get 25
