Thumbs up That Guy...Who Was in That Thing - documentary on Showtime

I really enjoyed "That Guy...Who Was in That Thing" a documentary film on Showtime.

I had written a lot more but it got deleted by PEBKAC.

It's a great insight into the real world of the anonymous lesser-known workaday Hollywood character actors.

What impresses me most is how they can have a house with a mortgage and kids in school when they're lucky to get one job a month. They all keep up with the time-wasting auditions in hopes of not only getting a role on a TV series but a TV series that gets picked up.

http://www.sho.com/sho/reality-docs/...t-thing#/index

I've spotted 3 of the guys on one movie and 3 TV shows since I watched just last week. See if you can tell me what roles.

Never saw that. He's the guy that kept reminding me of Billy Joel.

I knew the one guy as the

Secret Service agent in "Air Force One."

Two of those guys are side by side in "Argo," and I waited to see that they did have the v above Z in his names in the credits, (twice.)

BTW, his eyes don't look as dark and sunken when they light him better.

Only on seeing the Argo credits did I realize that the other guy we see all the time, Titus Welliver, was Silas Adams in Deadwood. I thought that was a cool character.

What's the point of that site? Clicking on some of the names only brings a short couple paragraphs about the actor, which is usually way out of date, and doesn't include any picture. So it's completely useless. The only thing I could see it being good for is to use the names to then look them up in IMDb.

Thanks for the heads up. Recorded and now watched this. Been a fan of all but 2-3 of these guys since the first time I saw them. Wish they would do a series on this topic. There are sooooo many more great, little known actors in the same boat as these 16.

I think the UI used to be (many many years ago) better.. I could be wrong.. It's the first site I remember seeing that had "semi-obscure but shows up in a lot of things" (my phrase) actors.

Under the missing profile pic is "image search" which opens a google image search tab. That helps a bit but not much.

I haven't seen it and don't have Showtime, but would really love it. One of my longtime hobbies is spotting these guys and remembering their names. Without looking up their faces, going through the list of who's in it, I recognize:

Xander Berkeley
Bruce Davison
Gregory Itzin
Zeljko Ivanek
Stanley Kamel
Timothy Omundson
Matt Malloy
Mark Rolston
William Morgan Sheppard

Which isn't too bad, considering most people don't. What I also find interesting is out of the list, 4 of them were on 24.

How is Timothy Omundson on this list? He's been one of the stars/series regulars on Psych for six seasons, and the seventh season starts in February. I would think that would disqualify him from something like this.

Even though he's on Psych, he's not a well known star. Also his versatility and ability to really become other characters (as opposed to "Timothy Omundson as...") makes him relatively unrecognizable. Most people would be hard pressed to remember him in Jericho.

THANKS! Loved it! But Dylan Baker as a 'poor man's Michael Clarke Duncan"?? I would've said "poor man's William H. Macy".

Darn, wish we got Showtime. Sounds like an excellent show.

I have a friend out in LA (well not living there now) that does editing. And during pilot season he would be an editor for 2-3 shows and hope that one would get picked up.

He got on to a few random ones, but nothing big.
So for a few months he would be super swamped with work, and the next, NADA

That is a great list. I immediately recognized every picture, but only knew the name of 2 of them. Danny Trejo and Stephen Tobolowsky.

The only reason I know ST's name is from listening to the Slashdot Filmcast. One of the guys on there is involved with ST somehow. He mentions the guy's name at least once an episode. If I didn't listen to that podcast, I wouldn't have a clue what his name was. I really only remember him from Groundhound Day, but he was so memoriable in that.

I have Showtime and added it to be recorded. It is on tomorrow morning at 5:30 am. Funny thing is I dialed the number to DirecTV last night to cancel all my premium channels. I hung up while it was rining as I suddenly decided I didn't feel like doing it that moment. Thought I'd do it from work today, but that didn't happen either. I'll wait and do it tomorrow.

I'm listening to the Tobolowsky files. Stephen is great writer.

The writer of that list had a knack for missing the major roles of those guys. David Morse in "Contact." JT Walsh in Backdraft. David Paymer in "Get Shorty," "Mr. Saturday Night," and "Crazy People"

I wouldn't say David Morse is a B actor. He's a co-star in "Treme" now.

He also doesn't seem to understand what it means to say someone is a "poor man's" <insert actor here>.

One funny one is I've always considered John Heard a poor man's JT Walsh. :P

They forgot the poor man's Joe Pesci, who sadly died as well. Bruno Kirby.

James Cromwell? Danny Trejo? While certainly not anywhere near "Tom Hanks" level of notoriety I think they're further away from "that guy" status than most...

Yeah I'd also consider him borderline "that guy" status too. I mean he's had some pretty significant roles in several major movies.

Some of these guys are A-list character actors,
<---Stephen Root
James Cromwell
David Morse
Was: Steve Buscemi

David Morse is not so much an actor that disappears into the role like Stephen Root or James Cromwell. See them both do the magic in Boardwalk Empire.
