Top Gear UK OAD 8/5/2013

It has been a long time since I've had a good laugh watching Top Gear but they really delivered tonight. Surely this was the most... thorough... caravan test yet. And with a couple new Lamborgini and Porsche cars as well.

And can I just say that I'm glad Richard wasn't along for the caravan test. His style this season and last has become so premeditated (I'm trying to avoid using the word "fake") and somehow the chemistry between Jeremy and James is getting more fun than ever. I was really surprised to see James do the Porsche power test but it was fantastic.

This was a great episode. The caravan race off road was hilarious.

My favorite LOL moment was The Stig taking the Mazda around the track and failing spectacularly.

Stig's time was 2:15 IIRC in a CX-5 pulling a trailer. Steven Tyler did his lap in 1:51 I think. Not bad, Stig!

I actually watched most of this episode (missed the first part) in London. We'd gotten back to the hotel that evening and I starting thinking, huh, isn't Top Gear on on Mondays? Missed probably the first 10-15 minutes or so. Wife was laughing herself to death watching the caravan test stuff.

This is a US message board, so the OAD refers to the original US broadcast. This thread is for the UK episode from 7/28.

The caravan stuff had me laughing, but I'm also thinking that seems like really flimsy construction. There doesn't appear to be any real frame there, just fiberglass shell attached to the trailer bed.

(Also the fact that they were racing to win the right to sleep anywhere other than the prestigious caravan lot )

Towed Caravans/RVs are built from the ground up, literally. They build the floor/trailer structure, put down the flooring, then stand up the walls on top of that. There are a few screws and nails that attach the walls to the floor, but that is the extent of the connection between them.

When the upper structure gets knocked out of alignment, the caravan loses all it's integrity. It's just like an aluminum can. Incredibly strong, until slightly weakened whereupon it collapses completely.

I thought the CX-5 was a DNF, since its trailer pulled it up by the hitch and nearly caused it to flip over (a testament to the Stig's driving skills)?

I rented a CX-5 a few months ago, and while it had the base gas engine and not the SkyActiv-D of the Top Gear car, I can't fathom it towing a 2000 kg trailer around. While it drove very nicely, it didn't seem particularly powerful when I drove it up and down the Black Hills of South Dakota and also over the Continental Divide.

If you've ever seen a motorhome or trailer involved in a crash, you wouldn't be surprised by what you saw on this episode of Top Gear. Plus in Europe there is an even greater emphasis on making the trailer as light as possible, since they like to tow them with car/engine combinations that Americans would never consider to be a worthy tow vehicle.

Huh, they must rerun it on Monday nights then (because I definitely caught it on a Monday, on BBC2 if I recall right).

And the season's already over? Yeesh.

Was the CUV/caravan comparison test the season finale? If so that would only make 5 episodes this season.
