WD20EURS $98.50 F/S Amazon

Don't know how long the price is good for, but it's on sale right now.

Anyone have any thoughts on what 'Silkstream Technology' optimized for continuous video recording/playback could possibly mean other than 'we reduced the cache to nothing because there is never anything cached'?

Wow, not a bad deal now at $95.92. Cheaper than the 1.5 TB!

Does anybody use these a lot and have any idea if these have the "Rev2" (IIRC that's what it says) controller card?

I think I hosed mine (I didn't drop the DRIVE, I dropped the laptop it was connected to, AFAIK not _on_ the drive.. but now it doesn't mount.. totally randomly hoping I fried the controller card somehow..).. and/or would like to try dd-ing my existing one to another and/or changing the controller card. (Various googling seems to show that you might have to change one chip ON the card from orig to the new one.. not sure.)

Darn, mine's actually a WD20EARS.. Hmm, down to $88, I guess that's close to the same price/TB as 3 & 4 TB drives nowadays, though I saw one 4 TB external at I think $159 at Fry's a few weeks ago.

...and I ended up getting a WD20EARS from one of the alternate sellers for around $100 total. Might not fix my issue, but just buying a controller card at all is around half that, so hopefully at least I have a replacement drive.

Was the drive connected to the laptop via SATA cable, USB adapter, what?

It was connected via USB adapter. One of the "bare drive" ones, so I knew I was risking it.. but note my drive is actually a different model than this thread is about.

I *did* hook it up to a computer at work directly (SATA internal), and same thing.. it shows the drive, and shows that there IS a partition, but can't actually mount it.. and I see various I/O errors shown.

As I said, I was wrong about the exact version, but bought another identical one. My first attempt is PROBABLY going to be to try to dd from one to the other, THEN run various repair/rescue utils on the *copy* of the orig drive.. If none of that works, I may attempt the controller card replacement. Even though I don't think that will help for I/O errors, again, I'm stumped. AFAIK, I did not drop anything on TOP of the hard drive nor drop the hard drive itself. I did drop the laptop it was connected to (well, it slipped off the bed).. It wasn't even writing to the drive at the time AFAIK.

So it was all my own carelessness.
