New Girl Season 4 (2014-2015) *Spoilers*

Is anyone still watching New Girl? I never see threads here, but IMO this is still one of the most consistently hilarious shows on TV. They did a good job with the Nick/Jess relationship and the aftermath, which is so often the death knell of TV shows.

I know not everyone is a fan of Zooey but post-season 1 she got rid of a lot of the annoying quirks and now Jess is just amusingly odd. And the surrounding cast, Nick and Schmidt especially, are great.

This is one I always watch the same night; usually "almost live".

So much better now that Nick and Jess aren't a couple. Big mistake going there and I think they realized it.

Ep 6 - "Background Check" was the funniest half hour I've seen in quite some time

I think the Nick and Jess relationship allowed for some great comedy, actually. And is usually the case with New Girl, also some really nice personal moments. I agree, though, that it's good they got in, mined it for all the humor they could, and got out (and mined that for all the humor they could).

"Background Check" had some really funny bits, but I personally prefer the episodes that don't rely on typical sitcom "stupidity". I'm having a hard time explaining what I mean: obviously every show relies on someone doing something silly but some episodes seem to require way more gratuitous and out of character idiocy: why didn't someone just put the rocks into a paper bag or backpack or something, walk it outside right past the policewoman, and dump it in a dumpster if they're so worried about it? Or put it up on the roof while the inspection is going on?

For example, "guys night" in this week's episode IMO was first-class fantastic (the other plotline at the teacher's convention was amusing but just OK), and exactly what I love about this show.

Boo to the new opening titles -- I can't believe anyone would get tired of Zooey Deschanel singing. (Yes, I assume it was to get Damon Wayans Jr. in, and perhaps to tone down even more of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl-ness that madscientist referred to.)

This season is rolling well with us. I was worried they had lost their mojo last season.

I also don't like the new opening. Just reshoot it with Damon in there. It was unique and fun. The new one is blah.

I didn't even realize they had a new opening! I'll have to check it out this week.

Not a fan of the new opening either.

Still really enjoying the show. I never had any problem with Nick and Jess together. I didn't understand what people were complaining about. But now that they're apart and still friends, I'm fine with that as well, and plus it removed the "will the or won't they" tension so now the writers can just come up with crazy scenarios for all of the characters to be as funny as possible.

I was kind of surprised that Cece slammed the door on Geoff in order to be with Schmidt. We all know Schmidt is still hung up on Cece, but I'm a little surprised that the feeling seems to be mutual.

Plus, as a completely heterosexual guy, even I can tell that Jess's new love interest is eye-poppingly gorgeous (in a Gavin Rossdale kind of way). My wife affirms that my perception is accurate.

Here's an interview with Liz Meriwether where she talked about having trouble writing for Nick and Jess as a couple.

There's a comment that speaks to this in the interview that cherry ghost posted a link to.

Should I give it a try again? I deleted my SP 3/4 way through the last season...really thought it went downhill.

It definitely went downhill, and now it's gotten better.

There were 1 1/2 whole seasons of Nick and Schmidt basically screaming throughout every episode.

Things are more calm now.

And Schmidt and CC should really get back together, it was the best few episodes the show ever had.

the new opener is too short to FF through! (I think that's good.)

OOPS - for some unexplained reason, neither Jake Johnson (Nick), Max Greenfield (Schmidt), nor Damon Wayans Jr. (Coach), submitted an entry for this year's Emmys.
