Elementary Dialog?

I know this season is over, but are my wife and I the only ones who just miss so much of Sherlocks dialog? Watson, is OK, and usually his brother, but Sherlock Mumbles when he does a stage whisper!

I always have the closed captioning on when I watch Elementary. In fact, I have it on for most shows. Any low pitched, quiet voice is difficult for me to pick out from background noise and music.

Yes, we were thinking of that. This show seems to be BAD, along with Person of Interest! They need to stop all the music during these scenes!

P.S We used to live in Arvada! Boy has that area changed!

I can hear ok, but I've gotten used to watching nearly everything (except live sports and a few other things) with closed captioning on. It was a little annoying at first, but I was also amazed at things that get captioned that I couldn't even tell were being spoken (usually off screen people or 'background' things), and it 'solved' the problem of me not being able to hear some of the things people were saying. It doesn't even really distract me anymore, either.

(I was going to post this an hour and a half ago, but work swept me away!)

I also have CC on all the time but wish it would sync better with some shows...Survivor and Amazing Race, for example. Elementary's CC synchs perfectly.

Well, when it goes back on I will try it. I still have a few Person of Interest shows I can try it on!

Just watched the season finale last night. Don't remember ever thinking I couldn't understand what Sherlock was saying.

I don't think I've ever used CC on my TV.

I have to use CC for everything I watch now. In fact, I get frustrated whenever I watch a TV somewhere else that doesn't have it.

I use ear phones when watching Elementary. They help my understanding of Sherlock's dialogue quite a bit.

That's the difference between a live show and a scripted show. Scripted shows are (almost) always captioned in advance, so they can sync them. Live shows, reality shows, news, sports... captioned by a live person who is listening just as you are. So they caption as quick as they can, but it always lags.

After 20 seasons, I quit watching Survivor. 50% because I was tired of it, but 50% because I was tired of watching captions lag the audio by 5-10 seconds.

AFAIK, you're the only one in this thread who literally _needs_ captions on all the time.

I leave them on the majority of the time at home, but when watching at other places, they don't have them on, so end up missing a word here and there once in a while (and ask "what did he say?" sometimes).

Though even with that, I leave them on partially so if I zone out a bit, I can catch up with the captions which are usually slightly behind the video, so even if I miss the audio of what someone said, the words are still on the screen, so I don't have to back up as much.

But Lecter on "Hannibal" is impossible to understand.. he definitely needs captions with his mumbly-accented speaking.

I've always wondered with shows like Survivor and TAR, is the editing finished late enough before broadcast that the shows can't be captioned in time, or are they playing shows like that so close to the vest that they won't even provide them to captioners for processing? Seems to me a non-disclosure or something like that could take care of that scenario.

Luckily I can hear well enough so I don't generally use them on shows like that because they lag so much, and they mis-caption enough of it to make me not want to use them. I'd prefer captions if they could be done well, though.

I've always wondered the same. Since the real season is over before the airing starts, surely they could caption them in advance.

This. Never had a problem understanding Sherlock.

Couldn't have CC on my tv. It would distract me terribly. Can't do movies with subtitles either. I'm a very fast reader, but I still miss things happening above when there are words to read on the bottom.

I use CC on some shows (for some reason, always FX shows!), but never Sherlock.

Then again, I've been watching British shows and movies for most of my 50-some years, so I'm probably just used to the variety of accents.

I never turn on CC for a whole show, but I have been known to back a program up 15 seconds and turn it on to catch something I may have missed. It is pretty rare that I do so though.

That is why I do not have cc on. It is also why I do not get foreign language Movies.

I'm the same. I can't read CC and watch the show at the same time. Especially if I'm chewing gum.

That's because you have to move your lips when you read.

my problem is my DirecTV Old HD DVR 20-700 we can understand great but it's ready to die so I only record 30 min shows, but my 34-500 DVR we can hardly understand anyone that talks. So I guess will have to get a Genie to take the place of the 2 DVR's in the living room.

NO! Some people have to point to the words and move their finger across the text.

I've said this before, I think Mads Mikkelson is a great actor but I can't understand a damn word he says. Hannibal is one of only two shows that I have to use CC for. The other being for the lead actor in Hell on Wheels.

How about that Irish guy on Sons of Anarchy? I almost always have to turn on CC when he's speaking.

Speaking of which, the subtitles on Fargo last night were pure gibberish! What's up with that?

Last week, the first showing of Fargo had scrambled captions. I recorded the next showing (maybe an hour or two later?), and they were good, so I didn't think much of it.

Same thing last night. I recorded two more airings, and all three have the gibberish. There is one more showing, that's my last hope. I think FX has an online viewer, I'll try that if necessary.

I think Louie is FX, it has no problems. So it's Fargo, not FX.

Just tried it, captions are synced online.

I'll send an email to FX and let them know.

Past 5 episodes or so Elementary has been hard to understand. Especially from Johnny Lee miller and his compatriots across the pond.
I can understand Watson, the NYPD cast, and almost everyone else.
