Doctor Who - Crimson Terror - OAD 5/4/2013

A better episode this week. Loved seeing Diana Rigg is the villainess.

I still think they need to resolve the Clara back-story soon, or at least, give us some clues.

I have to admit I chuckled at the Thomas Thomas kid who helped Strax find Sweetville. "You have arrived at your destination."

Any episode with the trio from Victorian England is a good episode. They could do a spin off series with them and I'd be all in.

I love Strax. Always wanting to take the extreme military option, threating to kill the horse (third one this week!) and yet deferring to Vastra.

And Jenny with the Matrix-like suit and moves!

Yes. She's 74!

Oh, and there were added wrinkles from the makeup department. She doesn't look quite that prunish in Game Of Thrones.

When Clara went "Miss me?" and got a kiss on the forehead, I heard "Kiss me?" and was thinking what a wimpy kiss!

I thought this was a better episode. I think Neil Gaiman's is next week.

I laughed at the GPS-like directions, but the significance of his name being Thomas Thomas went right over my head until you just pointed it out!

I wonder if that kid's voice will be available as a TomTom voice download.

I thought Jenny's suit was an Emma Peel nod (but they did do something weird with the speed of the fight, a la Matrix)

I'm also onboard with a Strax, Vastra, Jenny spinoff, please!

I loved her cameo in Extras a few years back. She was way more recognizable there.

This was a fun episode, and I love Jenny and Strax. Aside from a spin-off (which seems inevitable, considering attention paid to the three of them), it would be great if they traveled with the Doctor for a while, like temporary companions.

Clarity of Clara's photograph from Victorian era was a bit pushing it ... but on the plus side, the Deus Ex Screw Driver was only barely used (at least less than usual). Any idea how the Doctor got cured of the poison?

Same way as Clara, in that convenient reversing cabinet.

I hope Strax becomes a companion. He cracks me up. He's like a modern Leela who always wanted to kill somebody in her earlier episodes.

Where did Clara's Victorian era photographs and the other ones come from? Was somebody taking pictures in the background that I totally missed?

Hadn't we already seen her in that suit at least once before?

At Demons Run perhaps?

My favorite moment:

" I was spent hell of a long time trying to get a gobby Australian to Heathrow airport. " The only companion I actually met.

She was living in Victorian England as a nanny, so she probably posed for the photo. The picture in the sub was posed, too. Just because we didn't see them take it doesn't mean someone don't. The 1970s photo is more puzzling.

Edit to add: The composition of the 1970s shot seems off, but I do remember a camera in large usage in that episode to "catch" the "ghost."

The moves, although speeded Matrix like, were definitely Emma Peel. The only thing missing was the hair fling.

Can you explain? I figured it was either a reference to the original run, which I haven't seen much of, or that it was a UK pop culture reference I didn't pick up on.

Gobby Australian: Tegan Jovanka (companion to Dr #5) played by Janet Fielding.

Classic Episode: Time Flight.

Good episode. No one has mentioned the wonderful and creative 'back story' scene

I enjoyed it, for many of the reasons listed above (especially the Heathrow reference)... But even more so because it was back to a normal pacing. Something about the more recent episodes being 41 minutes of mystery being uncovered, and a 45 seconds resolution via deus ex, hasn't been thrilling me.

This was much more satisfying for that reason alone.

If you skip commercials, you missed them talking about this. We stopped when we saw they were talking about the show. That said, I have/had no idea who Diana Riggs was so it didn't mean much to me.
