ESPN's "Nine For IX"

Anybody watching ESPN's "Nine For IX" series of documentaries celebrating the 40th anniversary of Title IX? I'll admit that I've only watched one in the series and that was after it sat on my tivo for about three weeks. It was the "Let Them Wear Towels" episode that dealt with the then very controversial topic of female sports reporters having access to male locker rooms in the 70s. I found it to be very interesting and thought provoking. I vaguely remember the issue when it was happening but not the details. Something that very few people notice now was a big deal back then. A number of "villains" are noted, mostly old school coaches, players and Bowie Kuhn but there were also some heroes like Steve Garvey who went out of their way to help the women out.

I was a little surprised that one of the stories would feature the 1999 Women's World Cup - not that they don't deserve a story, but, in my opinion, the 1991 Women's World Cup would be more in line with the Title IX concept, as it was the first one (and there would not be women's soccer in the Olympics until 1996). They can't use "well, USA didn't win that one" as an excuse, because USA did win it.

If anything, the 1999 tournament moved women's sports backwards, as pretty much the only thing most people remember from it is "the sports bra."
