For those suffering from Downton Abbey withdrawal

Parade's End. A new mini series on HBO. Begins tonight.

http://tv.nytimes.com/2013/02/26/art...-hall.html?hpw

“Parade’s End” tells the story of a bad marriage, set in a much broader context of a rotting civilization.

And that’s the real difference between it and “Downton Abbey.” That show is a gauzy anachronism in period costumes; the first novel of “Parade’s End” was published in 1924, and the series is enmeshed in the great cataclysm of the time, underscoring the cruelty of the age as much as its charm.

No HBO here; it's already on the "buy it when the DVD comes out" list.

I'd heard very little about this - and knew I wanted to see it. Thanks for the article link, and the heads up!

I'm also looking forward to Mr. Selfridge. Period drama involving two of my favoritest stores ever!

I lasted a half hour. It was too British for me and I had no idea what was going on.

Watch Mr Selfridge or The Paradise if you're into costume dramas

I guess I'm a true Anglophile since I enjoyed it very much. It's currently 7.7 on IMDB and the print reviews have been excellent.

It kind of ticked me off because I had to work all kinds of sixth degree tivo-fu to reschedule conflicts so I'd get all of the episodes in the correct order. Anyway, it wasn't for me but I hope other people enjoyed it.

I made it 3/4 of the way through the first episode and found it confusing. It didn't help that there were regular audio dropouts and pixelation garbling things. That aside, though, I didn't understand a lot of what was going on. It felt like they had trimmed most of the exposition.

Thanks for the heads up on this - it doesn't quite have the down to earth charm or wit of Downton's Abbey but I still enjoyed it. I can see why some would be confused - I almost stopped watching after the first episode but kept going and was swept into the world of the show.

The cast is like a who's who of the best of British actors in supporting and minor roles. Rufus Sewell, Rupert Everett, Miranda Richardson, Geoffrey Palmer
... and Janet McTeer who was driving me crazy as to where I knew who her from - she was in the final season of Damages - I had no idea she was British

I might add that I posted the above before I got to the end and then I got to the end and felt a big "so what?" when it was all over.

I keep missing these. I need to reset my recordings to keep until I delete.
I look forward to being "swept into the world of this show."

Thanks, Cainebj.
