Tivo really HD?

I have just purchased a Sony KDL40HX853 television. With the external ariel connected, the television indicates that HD 1080 is being watched (when tuned to an HD channel). Whenever the Tivo box is watched even on HD channels the television indicates that only SD 576i is being displayed. I have had lengthy discussion with Sony but their technical support assures me that the television information on the signal is always correct and working properly.
The virgin engineer came out but claimed that the picture was HD quality. I suspect that the TV is up scaling the picture but I find it irritating that it should be better - I have just spent over £1000 on this product. Can someone please help!!!!
Sony and Virgin are blaming each other.

The output resolution of the Tivo may be incorrectly set. Check the support page here for assistance in changing the Tivo output resolution.

Setting Output Resolution

Sounds like you're using a Virgin Media Tivo in the UK, but these US directions should still get you to the right place.

Basic questions first: What model TiVo? How are you connecting the TiVo to your TV (HDMI or component cables?)

In the US we are caught between TiVo and our cable co. blaming each other.

Basically the previous post gave the most likely solution -- provided your TiVo model actually outputs HD.

Thanks

Many, many thanks. I have now adjusted the resolution. Superisingly the Tivo engineer swore blind that the picture was HD - which it obviously wasn't! Nevertheless, it probably says alot for the new breed of Sony smart tv's. It makes you wonder how many other people are watching at the wrong resolution.
Thanks again

In the future, there's a specific Virgin Media TiVos in the UK forum, and the people that hang out there are pretty smart as well.
